Salvador Dali vs. The Matrix

Dali, the painter: Salvador Domingo Felipe Jacinto Dalí i Domènech, Marqués de Dalí de Pubol (11 May 1904 – 23 January 1989).

His self-appointed task: shake up reality.

Make the impossible intrude on the ordinary. Expose and confound the critics and the press. Whenever the establishment tries to define who he is, become something else.

The critics would have declared Dali a mental patient if he hadn’t had such formidable classical painting skills.

He placed his repeating images (the notorious melting watch, the face and body of his wife, the ornate and fierce skeletal structures of unknown creatures) on the canvas as if they had as much right to be there as any familiar object.

This was quite troubling to many people. If an immense jawbone that was also a rib or a forked femur could rival a perfectly rendered lamp or couch or book (on the same canvas), where were all the safe and easy accoutrements and assurances of modern comfortable living?

Where was the pleasantly mesmerizing effect of a predictable existence?

Where was a protective class structure?

To make it worse, Dali invented vast comedies. But the overall joke turned, as the viewer’s eye moved, into a nightmare, into an entrancing interlude of music, a memory of something that had never happened, a gang of genies coming out of corked bottles.

What was the man doing? Was he making fun of the audience? Was he simply showing off? Was he inventing waking dreams? Was he, God forbid, actually imagining something entirely new that resisted classification?

Dali’s greatest paintings were undeniable symphonies, and mere acknowledgment of his talent would not explain how he composed the movements.

Words failed viewers and critics and colleagues and enemies.

But they didn’t fail Dali. He took every occasion to explain his work. However, his explications were handed out in a way that made it plain he was telling tall tales—interesting, hilarious, and preposterous tall tales.

Every interview and press conference he gave, gave birth to more attacks on him. Was he inviting scorn? Was he really above it all? Was he toying with the press like some perverse Olympian?

Media analysts flocked to make him persona non grata, but what was the persona they were exiling? They had no idea then, and they have no idea now.

It comes back to this: when you invent something truly novel, you know that you are going to stir the forces trapped within others that aspire to do the very same thing. You know that others are going to begin by denying that anything truly NEW even exists. That DOES make it a comedy, whether you want to admit it or not.

It is possible that every statement ever uttered in public by Dali was a lie. A fabrication. An invention dedicated to constructing a massive (and contradictory) persona.

Commentators who try to take on Dali’s life usually center on the early death of his young brother as the core explanation for Dali’s “basic confusion”—which resulted in his “bizarre behavior.”

However, these days, with good reason, we might more correctly say that Dali was playing the media game on his own terms, after realizing that no reporter wanted the real Dali (whatever that might mean)—some fiction was being asked for, and the artist was merely being accommodating.

He was creating a self that matched his paintings.

It is generally acknowledged that no artist of the 20th century was superior to Dali in the ability to render realistic detail.

But of course Dali’s work was not about realism.

The most complex paintings—see, for example, Christopher Columbus Discovering America and The Hallucinogenic Toreador—brilliantly orchestrated the interpenetration of various solidities of realities, more or less occupying the same space.

I’m sure that if Dali were living today, he would execute a brain-bending UFO landing on the front lawn of the White House. Such a painting would envelop the viewer with several simultaneous dimensions colliding outside the president’s mansion.

At some point in his career, Dali saw (decided) there was no limit to what he could assemble in the same space—and there was no limit to the number of spaces he could corral on the same canvas. A painting could become a science-fiction novel reaching into several pasts and futures. The protagonist (the viewer) could find himself in such a simultaneity.

Critics have attacked the paintings relentlessly. They hate the dissonance. It’s a sign that Dali could give full play to his imagination—a sin of the first order. They resent Dali’s mordant wit, and rankle at the idea that Dali could carry out monstrous jokes—in such fierce extended detail—on any given canvas.

But above all, the sheer imagination harpoons the critics. How dare a painter turn reality upside down so blatantly, while rubbing their faces in the detail.

The cherry on the cake was: for every attack the critics launched at Dali the man (they really had no idea who he was), Dali would come back at them with yet another elaborate piece of fiction about himself. It was unfair. The critics were “devoted to the truth.” The painter was free to invent himself over and over as many times as he fancied.

Dali was holding up a mirror. He was saying, “You people are like me. We’re all doing fiction. I’m much better at it. In the process, I get at a much deeper truth.”

Dali was the hallucinogenic toreador. He was holding off and skirting the charges of the critics and the historians. They rushed at him. He moved with his cape—and danced out of the way.

The principles of organized society dictate that a person must be who he is, even if that is a cartoon of a cartoon. A person must be one recognizable caricature forever, must be IDed, must have one basic function. Must—as a civilization goes down the trail of decline—be watched and recorded and profiled.

When a person shows up who is many different things, who can invent himself at the drop of hat, who seems to stand in 14 different places at the same time, the Order trembles.

This is not acceptable.

(Fake) reality declares: what you said yesterday must synchronize absolutely with what you say today.

This rule (“being the only thing you are”) guarantees that human beings will resonate with the premise that we all live and think and work in one continuum of space and time. One. Only one. Forever.

That’s the biggest joke of all. The big lie.

Whatever he was, however despicable he may have been in certain respects, Dali broke that egg. Broke the cardinal rule.

He reveled in doing it. He made people wait for an answer about himself, and the answer never came. Instead, he gave them a hundred answers, improvised like odd-shaped and meticulous reveries.

He threw people back on their own resources, and those resources proved to be severely limited.

How harsh for conventional critics to discover that nothing in Dali’s education produced an explanation for his ability to render an object so perfectly on the canvas. It was almost as if, deciding that he would present competing realities inside one painting, he perversely ENABLED himself to do the job with such exacting skill, “making subversive photographs come to life.”

That was too much.

But there the paintings are.

Imagination realized.

Exit From the Matrix

Like it or not, Dali paved the way for many others. He opened doors and windows.

And the pressure has been building. The growing failure of major institutions (organized religion, psychology, education, government, the press) to keep the cork in the bottle signals a prison break in progress.

More people understand that the veil is not really a veil of tears. It’s a curtain madly drawn across the creative force.

The pot is boiling. People want out.

Somewhere along the line we have to give the green light to our own creative power. That is the first great day. That’s the dawn of no coerced boundaries. Everything we’ve been taught tells us that a life lived entirely from creative power is impossible. It’s crazy. It’s meaningless. We don’t have it within us. We should maintain silence and propriety in the face of greater official power and wisdom. We must abide by the rules. We must, at best, “surrender to the universe.”

But what if, when we come around the far turn, we see that the universe is us? Is simply one part of imagination? Is a twinkling rendition installed to keep us titillated with dreams that would forever drift out of reach?

Hi again, folks. This is your friendly reality salesman, back for another reminder.

In my last message, I mentioned that all the inhabitants of Earth are due for a booster shot of our massively popular Perception Package. These updates occur every 20,000 years.

Our superior product gives you stability, reliability, and a basic foundation of unchanging reality.

Last time, I also mentioned that imagination was the fly in the ointment. Don’t venture into that area; if you do, your Perception Package will deteriorate and lose force.

You may even begin to see “other spaces and times,” and what good is that? No, stick with what you’ve bought, and you’ll remain happy.

Limits make lives. You can fiddle and diddle and experiment within the boundaries of the Package. You can put your faith in all sorts of fairy tales. But in the end, it is your perception along a severely restricted arc of the potential spectrum that gives you comfort and security.

Think of our Package as a gated community, where all your needs are met on-site. Why venture out? Why visit strange places? You’re safe right where you are.

I want to make a clarification re our Information Brochure 405-A2, which, as you know, goes out to all 10 billion subscribers on Earth. A statement on page 567, paragraph 4, has caused a bit of confusion. It reads:

“On other worlds, the inhabitants may perceive space and time differently, but that is because their environments and circumstances vary…”

We received a number of queries about how the perception of space and time could possibly differ from world to world. For example, one person asked, “Are not space and time the same in all places and times?”

The answer is: space and time are functions of perception. Otherwise, why would be selling a Perception Package?

Yes, other experiences of space/time are possible. But for you, the result of treading beyond the Package we have provided is disorientation and danger.

We have calculated “how far you can go.” That is our genius. Trust us. You don’t want to test the limits.

At this time, we are working closely with Earth governments to identify and rescue those who have strayed. Those souls need help, and we are determined to bring them back into the fold.

Life as it exists for you is a series of systems, nothing more. Our Package integrates with these systems. It’s a perfect fit.

DON’T EXPERIMENT WITH THE PACKAGE.

Doing so is symptomatic of a serious disorder.

Our repair and re-ed groups are currently expanding their reach across the planet. Contact us if you sense a problem. Report others who may be in trouble.

How you see reality=our Perception Package=a constant faithful friend and guide.

We are more than a manufacturing and sales organization. We are dedicated to the Good of All.

That dedication keeps us strong in the face of any disruption in service.

Our trained technicians are available 24/7 to take your calls and initiate program reconfigurations.

Remember our first principle: Perception makes the world go ‘round.

Signing off for now. Enjoy today. No matter what may befall you, you’re operating at the optimum level, all things considered. Accept things as they are. This is true enlightenment. We should know; we invented it.

“Sooner or later, the individual comes to a crossroad, a crisis. Will he cooperate with limitation, or will he strike out on his own? Will he spend time ferreting out what the Glob wants and accede to it? Will he take on a theatrical role of Citizen? Will he abandon glimpses of his own immortality and power? Will he stand quietly at a spiritual mailbox and wait for messages to be delivered to him, or will he invent his own messages and create the future?” (The Underground, Jon Rappoport)

(For Part 2, click here.)

…For a moment, a person sees beyond the picture of accepted reality. He sees huge open space. He knows he can act on the basis of an inner leverage. He knows he has great power.

And then…

THE REALITY SALESMAN CALLS.

Step up, folks. This is a deal you can’t afford to miss. You know that thing you cling to like a drowning man in a turbulent sea?

It’s called reality, and I represent the company that manufactures it. I’m proud to say I’ve held this job for over a hundred thousand years. So as far as product knowledge is concerned, you just aren’t going to find anybody like me.

I’m here to tell you that reality is never anything more than rocks and bricks and concrete and steel. Reality is never anything more than a house and all the things in it, and the mementos you hold on to, to remind you of the past.

And in conjunction with that, I’m really selling…guess what?

A little thing called perception.

I’m selling How You See Things.

Because, no matter what time period you live in, it all comes down to that: how you see what’s in front of you.

And believe it or not, perception comes in different forms. My company makes the perception that endures. It’s the package you’re living with right now. It’s the down-to-earth here-it-is straight-ahead common-sense type. We call it: IT IS WHAT IT IS. That’s trademarked, by the way. IISWII. It is what it is.

IISWII was invented by a very smart guy whose name has been long forgotten. He was a flaming genius, and he realized something great. People would go for IISWII because it would lock them in.

Who wants to wake up on a Tuesday morning and suddenly see life in a completely different way?

IISWII is the most popular perception package in the universe, bar none. It has Reliability. Consistency.

All those centuries and epochs ago, when I was a rookie training for this job, the guys let me try on a whole bunch of different perception packages, so I could see what kind of competition I was up against.

I saw foolish things, ridiculous things, dangerous things. But when I was given IISWII, our product, I felt like I was home.

IISWII gives you a stability you can count on for your whole life. And, believe me, that’s no small feat.

IISWII is time-tested. It’s as solid as solid can be. It doesn’t break down.

But it does need vaccine boosters from time to time, and that’s why I’m here today talking to you.

Every twenty thousand years, we institute a planet-wide upgrade, just to make sure nothing goes wrong. And you’re all due.

Now, you could refuse, in which case you’ll have to take full responsibility for the ugly consequences, or you could do the right thing and just re-up. I have to tell you, our re-up rate is 99.859 percent. I’m proud of that figure.

In the small print, the contract lays out a few details concerning IMAGINATION. This is for your own protection—because if you take imagination too far (and who knows how far that is, until it’s too late), you’ll set up what we call an interference field, which means IISWII will tend to malfunction. You don’t want that.

So here’s the contract. Sign on the dotted line, and we’re done.

Thank you very much.

I love you guys. Really, I do. I admire your tenacity and your willingness to stay with our package. Our company continues to prosper because of you.

THE PLEDGE: “I promise not to mess with the perception package. If I believe someone is operating outside the boundaries of the package, I will shun him. I will turn him in to the authorities. If I myself stray, I will confess and receive treatment. All hail to the IISWII perception package!”

The reality salesman knows what he’s doing. He makes a very good living. Secretly, he knows our perception of our own lives and futures is grossly limited by his product, just as our eyes can only see part of the light spectrum. He is aware of this.

He’s selling limitation.

It’s a winner.

Unless you happen to be part of the 1%. No, I don’t mean the super-wealthy class. I mean the 1% of the population who doesn’t want limitation of perception. I mean the people who want to see beyond the virtual bubble they live in:

The creators, the artists, the inventors, the explorers, who don’t sign on the dotted line when the reality salesman makes a house call.

Man of the World

(To read about Jon’s mega-collection, Exit From The Matrix, click here.)

On the night he was born
He stole a billion dollars

Engineered from the mathematics of his crib
He bought and sold oil on paper
And digital gold mines in the Orion Belt

He was taught Homer and the songs of the great wanderers, and at a tender age, strolling through long gardens, bought all the insane asylums in New York State

Upon graduation from an academy no one could find on a map, he wrote a dissertation, My Disenchantment with Non-Lethal Viruses

He rapidly rose in the ranks of an army that was unattached to any nation and he broke ground on a chain of banks invented to launder
Any item in the galaxy that wasn’t nailed down

It was once reported: he loves cats and insects under glass and drinks a glass of sherry before dinner

According to his wife, whom no one knows, when he speaks during dreams at night, he moves fluidly between Latin and 3350 BC Sumerian

He helps the poor
He derides the irresponsibly rich
He wants more trees
And no automobiles
He plans to reincarnate as a pandemic

His name is stricken from all university curricula and rivers run or are dammed by his task forces

He writes: I wonder how I can hold legal title to the night and the mystifying shapes that run across the mind

I wonder how I can reduce the planet to a molecule in a bell jar on my father’s mantle

I wonder if there is a theoretical absolute to how many boxes of crimes within crimes can be structured in a single government

He plays tennis on his lawn Thursday afternoons with an old friend whose face he tries to remember

He opens a safe in his study wall and removes a black box and presses colored buttons whose functions have escaped him

He walks along the old creek on a summer afternoon and thinks back to a time whose images have faded
and may have originally been inserted by a machine

He picks a flower from a grave and pauses to consider whether he is buried there

All hail to the ISWII perception package!”

I mean the people who want to see beyond the virtual bubble they live in.

The creators, the artists, the inventors, the explorers, who don’t sign on the dotted line when the reality salesman makes a house call.

My newer blog is steadily growing. I’ve posted 40 pieces over the last several months. You can sign up for the FREE email list there (or click here) and receive all the articles:

OutsideTheRealityMachine.wordpress.com

My two latest entries are “The arcane and esoteric power,” and a short story, “Corpus Delicti.”

The blog carries both fiction and articles about what exists beyond the reality/consensus, with no limits.

Existing and breathing and creating outside what we ordinarily take to be reality is vital for us on every level.

And we all need stimulation/reminders that our imaginations are always at our beck and call, rain or shine.

Three aspects of living: accepting what is presented to us; investigating behind that to uncover truth; inventing new and better realities and futures.

I hope you’ll take a look at the new blog and find something important there.

I just want to thank the people who are commenting positively on my piece, Who I Write For.’ I’m getting a stream of emails, too, and I can’t reply to everyone individually. It’s been a long and sometimes strange and wonderful 14 years at NoMoreFakeNews.com. I had no idea all the places it would go when I started. In the last few years, my tech colleague, Theo, has made it possible to reach many more people, for which I’m very grateful. Hats off to him.

I keep returning to the subject of imagination, because I know that when people access that capability, which has no limits, there is the potential to take off and create whole new lives.

And then, on a larger scale, we have the possibility, somewhere out in the future, of thereby creating a different kind of society, which is open, which has many, many people inventing their own realities—instead of having just one centralized and centrally controlled system.

This fantastic outcome may seem remote, but everything new and truly revolutionary is remote—until it isn’t.

So I take the long view, and I keep writing.

Thanks again for your comments. They mean a great deal to me.

After 14 years, good things are starting to cook. Lots more ahead.

With very few exceptions, the history of philosophies and spiritual systems on this planet is the history of What Already Exists.

These varied systems may seek to probe behind the curtain, below the surface—but on whatever level they purport to operate, they are attempting to uncover ultimate Reality.

Meaning: a Reality that already exists.

The philosophers and priests don’t view this as a problem. And for the most part, their audiences don’t see a problem, either.

This is an astonishing state of affairs.

It is made astonishing because every human has the capacity to imagine and invent realities; and of course these realities don’t exist, have never existed, until they are invented.

Unfortunately, the overwhelming number of people prefer to ignore this fact. They prefer to attach themselves, like barnacles, to some reality that is already there, whether it is superficial or “profound.”

And were you to question them about their preference, they would fail to understand what you were talking about.

They’re marching in the parade and attending the carnival called What Already Exists.

The “there-ness” of What Exists is entrancing, hypnotic, the number-one box office hit of all time.

If you took such an entranced human and locked him in a room with a table, paints, brushes, canvas, and water—and told him he would only receive a meal when he produced two paintings, he would face a very steep situation:

His massive loyalty to What Already Exists would meet his desire to remain alive.

Some people, in that room, would opt for starvation. Others, despite everything they’d been taught to think, would begin to paint.

They would slide two paintings under the door and receive food through a slot. A meal.

Exit From the Matrix

They would do this three times a day—and at some point, after they had completed fifty paintings, a hundred paintings, a thousand, ten thousand, they would wake up from the deepest trance they had ever known.

They would see with new eyes. They would think with a new mind.

What Already Exists would fade into obscurity.

No, the physical world wouldn’t disappear. In fact, the painter would view it with new clarity and interest.

But first and foremost, he would know he can live by and through imagination.

He would understand his former ironclad and obsessed attachment to What Exists was itself achieved through an act of imagination. Not through mere acceptance.

That revelation would hit him between the eyes.

This world is run, on a daily basis, by reality-addicts. Their need for their next fix is overwhelming.

Getting that fix is what they call happiness.

This is what happens inside the Reality Machine.

The creative versus the machine

The creative versus the machine

There are some people who hear the word CREATE and wake up, as if a new flashing music has begun.

This lone word makes them see something majestic and untamed.

They feel the sound of a Niagara approaching.

They suddenly know why they are alive.

Most people don’t travel to that grand arena because they’ve been trained like pets by some sector of this society to be good girls and boys.

Maybe you once saw something truly free that didn’t care about consequences, and it blew you into tomorrow and turned on your soul’s electricity for an hour.

CREATE is a word that should be oceanic. It should shake and blow apart the pillars of the smug boredom of the soul.

CREATE is about what the individual does when he is on fire and doesn’t care about concealing it. It’s about what the individual invents when he has thrown off the false front that is slowly strangling him.

CREATE is about the end of mindless postponement. It’s about what happens when you burn up the pretty and petty little obsessions. It’s about emerging from the empty suit and empty machine of society that goes around and around and sucks away the vital bloodstream.

CREATE can come as a wild clanging of impossible things.

Exit From the Matrix

Out of dull silence, imagination answers the call and opens up caverns of energy.

Everything that already exists stands up and announces it is ready to melt down and become raw fuel for imagination.

Fear announces it. Revenge announces it. The desperate wish to belong announces it. Threads of aimless longing announce it. The void announces it.

Then, action.

Then, nothing is ever the same again.

The life of Herculean accommodation at all levels is over.
