Why the Law of Attraction fails

Why the Law of Attraction fails

The law is stated in two ways.

First, positive thoughts attract positive results in life, and negative thoughts attract negative results. This is mainly a descriptive overview. It doesn’t apply to people who consciously do something to change their own thoughts. It’s a “philosophic” basis for understanding why people get what they get in life.

Therefore, one assumes, if a hundred thousand people are dying of thirst during a drought, they brought that on by thinking a whole lot of negative thoughts.

People who advocate the law of attraction tend to dislike such examples. They sometimes hedge their bets by asserting that external events (e.g., a drought) are quite real and they never claimed otherwise.

This produces a blurry line between events that “just happen” independent of what people are thinking, and events which are the result of negative or positive thoughts.

The second version of the law emphasizes that people, by changing the nature of their own thoughts, automatically affect what they get in life.

Certainly, this isn’t achieved by a person entering his own mind like a surgeon with a scalpel, pruning away the negative. The interior landscape is far too large, the flows of thought are too mercurial, and quite often, what seems like a successful surgery later turns out to be a dud: the old excised thoughts return.

A frontal attack on thought is like trying to wipe out air.

But there are meditations and repetitive affirmations. Many advocates of the law recommend them. Focus on thinking about what you truly want. Clarify such thoughts. Repeat them to yourself over and over. Affirm them. Or concentrate on an object of desire.

Doing this in a dispassionate way hardly calls up very much energy. It’s about as effective as trying to move forward in an active ocean while sitting in a paper boat and paddling with a soup spoon.

What, though, happens if you really believe you can get what you want by thinking positively about it over and over, or by focusing on it?

In that case, the driving engine is that belief.

And this is a whole other territory. Suppose you ardently believe that by visualizing a purple rose sitting on a boiled egg, you will become rich? Suppose you believe that a pink bulldog dropping down from the sky holding the string of a large balloon will give you a new house?

The purple rose and the boiled egg and pink bulldog aren’t the vital components. What’s vital is the underlying belief.

If someone tells you that you can change your thoughts from negative to positive, and that by doing this you’ll get what you want…and you believe this is true…then your practice of visualization or affirmations is less than it seems. It’s running on, and powered by, Belief.

Is belief enough? Will it carry the freight?

Exit From the Matrix

There is no blanket conclusion possible. It all depends on who is believing and how they are believing and with what power they are believing, and with what conviction, and with what passion, and with what “belief in their belief.”

I have seen, and you have, too, I’m sure, people who achieve remarkable things based on what they believe.

And it doesn’t matter whether they are engaged in “changing their thoughts from negative to positive.” The law of attraction itself is irrelevant.

Furthermore, people who hold very strong beliefs act on them. They don’t sit in a room and power up that belief-engine and wait for something to happen. They aren’t involved in some “snap-of-the-fingers” manifestation. They take massive and sustained action.

They live out their beliefs.

They create what wasn’t there before.

And in that act of creating, during a life lived, at some point along the line, they experience remarkable collisions of events—the fancy label is synchronicity. People and situations come to their aid.

You could call that magnetic attraction. You could call it magic. You could call it oobladee. It doesn’t matter.

In large numbers of people, the ordinary notion of the law of attraction helps to make them passive. They wait. They think. They re-think. They spin wheels.

Some of them begin to believe they have to banish the negative, and this process leads them into confusion and discomfort of a high order, because it doesn’t work. Thoughts, untold numbers of floating random thoughts, are the wrong target. They’re a dime a dozen, and there are billions of dozens. Who cares?

The idea of purifying one’s own thoughts is a dead-end alley in the long run.

It becomes a fetish.

And those who preach the “philosophy” are, sometimes, merely interested in controlling the flock. The more androidal members of the flock will, now and then, say, “Did you hear about Bob? He’s in the hospital. Too many negative thoughts.”

On a political level, this degenerates into “we suspect Jones just had an incorrect thought.”

Living a creative life through and by imagination is a whole other process. That’s the major leagues. That’s the expression of life-force in a voice that tears away the curtain of consensus reality.

Inventing what otherwise would never be there.

That kind of life quite naturally, without effort, shelves trillions of sputtering thoughts because they don’t matter. Negative? Positive? Makes no difference. It’s a puerile distinction.

In living a creative life, one’s past, one’s experiences, feelings, thoughts, memories—they’re all fuel for the fire. In that fire, a soul forges what he will invent, what new reality he will make.

He doesn’t diddle around with “positive and negative.”

[…] In my experience, this “law of attraction” thing is a real thing. But it is very hard to communicate and if we try to put it into words we fall far short of the thing, and people only partly understand, or misunderstand, or fall into the habit of trying to derive profit from it in a material way (possibly at the expense of others). Jon touches upon some of this when he brings up the concept of “belief” which is yet another thing that is hard to put into words. There are so many ways to put this, and none of them are quite right. In the end, it is necessary to let go of the notion that a spiritual concept can be adequately expressed, and a sort of surrendering to that is necessary (another idea impossible to put into words). I guess I’m trying to say that we all communicate in different ways, our ideas and emotions and things that we “know” and things that we “feel” — with words, with concrete descriptions, or allegory, or poetry. Or music, or visual art, or performance art. Dance. So many ways. But these are spiritual concepts and in the end, the knowing and the experiencing and the connection (maybe our eyes meeting, or any other way we can touch or connect with each other) is the way.

it is, in my experience, absolutely necessary to let go of the notion that we can ever possibly convey this stuff entirely through any of these avenues. To understand or apprehend, at a certain point each individual has to take the reins of self discovery. That is a bit where belief intersects. And then, words fail. But once you start catching on, this doesn’t seem to matter as much.

Except… the connections continue to matter, and advancing in this way can mean some loneliness for a period of time, if your loved ones remain back in the other paradigm, or worse yet, if they believe YOU have been led astray and they want the comfort of the sameness of the old you. I think that desire to connect is why we keep trying to explain spiritual concepts to each other. Also because of love.

If you look at the past 100 years. You can’t think of anything but negative. I mean Look at all the wars, depression and recessions. Look at prohibition on created so that alcohol wouldn’t be used in cars for fuel. Stupid idiots thought the government cared about them and didn’t want them to drink. This created millionaires like Capone and Kennedy. Then you had free sex and drugs of the sixties that destroyed families. After each war the goyim would party and make more little goyim. Look at just since the 1990’s with the all the bombings and killing children and the wars. If white people don’t go out and start putting lead into these scumbags I’m telling you your Grandchildren are not going to be happy changing your bed pan and wiping your nasty butt when they are a slave. You lone wolves better wake up and lock and load, because we are in this situation, because this is what our ancestors handed us. They could have taken care of the Rothschilds a hundred years ago, but did nothing and now we are in a dire situation.
If you really were to think about it. You don’t even want to think what your children will have to go through in the next couple decades. Just read what happened in Russia from 1917 to the outbreak of WWII. If you don’t mention the Jews you are just flapping your jaws. When you mention the Jews, then they come after you like they did Edgar Steele and Matt Hale. So you dissidents had better think. They went after the scientists and now the bankers and the next on the list will be the dissidents and the preachers.

  4. Bj says:

Merriam Webster says believe is: to accept or regard something as true; to accept the truth of what is said; to have (a specified opinion); to consider, to have a firm faith. You might rephrase this as your reality is what you, accept, regard, have, consider, and have a firm faith in. Interesting consider and accept are definitions of believe. It didn’t include “really” believe. You have a tough standard to crack!

    Great article!
I like how your mind works Jon 🙂
There is so much more behind it all…belief, desire, karma, your personal soul’s plan.
I feel we do attract circumstances in our lives by thought, but a lot of it is unconcious.
Becoming concious and aware is the key as well as sovereignty over one’s self.

But you already know this don’t you, clever clogs!

All the best and thanks for caring x

  6. Great article questioning the validity of this concept. Much appreciated. If there is any such thing as “law of attraction”, I would say that what someone unconsciously attracts into their life is directly related to what I’ve been calling “archetypal transference”.

This whole post reminds me of when David smiles and says, “We need the eggs, dear” — a reference to the following joke: “My brother thinks he’s a chicken!” “What?! Why don’t you do something about that? Send him to a psychiatrist or something!” “We need the eggs.” Belief is very powerful, but so are emotional undercurrents, which is why getting caught up in “negative” or “positive” thoughts short circuits people. There IS such a thing as vibration, and that’s not just New Age gobblety-gook, although there IS also a lot of that, for sure! I know for me, personally, if I need money, I get a massive influx from taking the day off work. I also know that if I need or want something, it shows up in my life in very short order, so long as I’m not grasping at it. I can create a “place holder” like putting a “sold” sign on something to reserve it for my own “pickup,” and I know it will come to me because it consistently does. The times something I’m determined to have doesn’t come to me are so rare and so startling that they beg the question, “Do I really want this?” I must say, I’m an even bigger fan of the Law of Repulsion than I am of the Law of Attraction. Creating an overriding filter of “if not this, then something better” works (at least in my life and in the lives of the happiest and most effective people I know). In this world of mind control, “Create your own reality or live someone else’s.”

According to how you were raised. If someone called you idiot and you are stupid when you were young, then this would not apply. I’ve seen fat ugly bastards on the bottom rung of the social ladder walk in and move through the crowd with nasty body funk and they think they deserve to be among the pretty. Then someone comes along and calls them a fat ugly bastard and the Emperor has no clothes and they realize the truth and slither out the backdoor. I like positive people and damn few like negative people. Keep a girl laughing and you’ll be banging her soon. You say one thing negative and you ain’t getting that pussy. She’ll walk away in an instant.

I was about to send a thoughtful reply I’d begun writing to the private email you sent me through one of my websites; however, your comment here is so crass, needlessly sexist and offensive that I’ve deleted that reply.

You might want to stretch yourself into viewing people as individuals instead of objects or cartoons. Do not assume you know how strangers or entire races were raised. Not everyone who disagrees with you is an idiot or a “fat, ugly bastard,” and I can assure you that any issues you have with getting women to sleep with you stem from far more than lack of laughter.

  9. Moleman says:

I’m neither positive nor negative. I’m a realist. I assess a situation, and have a reasonable expectation of what the outcome is most likely to be. Optimists rush headlong into bad situations. Pessimists are plagued by inaction. Us realists are….realistic. That, coupled with the fact that I do have very strong beliefs which I act on, means that I am often the one to evade the bad and to get full advantage of the good situations. I feel sorry for so many today who simply don’t believe in anything (or who believe in a false god of their owen making, which is necessarily inferior to themselves)- as their lives are empty quests for meaning, which is never attained.

    • “Us realists are….realistic.” – Mothman
      Who precisely are ‘Us’?

“That, coupled with the fact that I do have very strong beliefs.” – Moleman

There’s a difference between beliefs and opinions and memes. I would care to say…”What your consider belief is closer to an opinion that has memed in an uneducated, ego driven, younger male population, which has become vulgar and narcistic without potential.

Meaning your God is the right one…which from my point of view signifies some sort of duality in thought, negating the first part of your statement, that you are neither ‘positive or negative ’.
So in conclusion you have found meaning in knowing the right God is on your side, and you believe men are superior…especially to syrupy females who are unintelligent, and ‘bang false positives’.

Too funny…way too funny. Keep searching sport.

  10. Jarrod says:

Instead of avoiding the negative, go straight to the center of it and deal with it. Otherwise you are missing out on the opportunity for growth that it provides. Looking at things in this way dissolves the illusion of polarity.

    • g says:

Sometimes though going straight to the centre and dealing with unleashes a huge amount of aggression and backlash from people who will really hurt you, not to mention a group of bystanders who will watch and do nothing. Believe me I would love to go straight to the centre but at times, when things like your home and health can be hurt, you have to choose battles carefully. I am seen as an easy target because I am alone, with no partner or family to back me up. When people hurt me nobody sees my tears nor do I have anyone to cry with, talk to or lean on. There has never been anyone else to answer to, so those who have hurt me don’t care. One of my biggest life wishes is that people would look out for each other and care for each other, so that if someone gets hurt, there will be another person or group saying to the offender- why did you do that? Stop, it, go and make ammends. These days its almost as if the ‘weakest in the pack ‘ needs the strength of an army just to stay afloat.

And I’m not even the ‘weakest in the pack’, just someone who is somehow different, gentle, kind. This hasn’t stopped me from dealing with many, many challenges. Most of these challenges the ones with social support would not be strong enough to withstand, yet I have had to deal with this, invisibly. Now I am older and more careful. When I look around me and see people with lots of friends, social support, respect etc, I never ever understand why they are not doing more to make bigger changes in society. I guess though if you are comfortable in life, why rock the boat??

These days, I realise the challenges will come and go, but I want to have as much fun as possible, so that when I strike, I will have some good times to fall back on.

  11. I had this “argument” with someone on LinkedIn.

They insisted that “thinking positive” was what was needed, irrespective of the external influences (which are a BIG part of today’s society). The “Laws of Attraction”, in my view, would only be successful if we had a free society, and one that had a true free-market economy, NOT the corporate and politically control model we have had for the last century-and-a-half.

Though, the philosophical side of it does sound very warm and fuzzy, it fails to contradict the edicts of those who effectively rule over us. – It is ACTION that begets REACTION and RESULTS.

If things were so easy to “wish into existence”, then “Living” life on Earth would be a huge waste of time! Plus, we tend to forget the importance of the process, the journey to get where we want to be. We have been conditioned to look at only the results, or lack thereof.

It is fine to have the ideals, goals, and the desire to go and do. It is another to be half-hearted in the doing, to include not waging the battle to defend your Dream. Too many, quit so soon, before the real battle has even commenced.

  12. Max Pont says:

This is an attack on the Law of Attraction as it is formulated in the movie The Secret, which got the inspiration from the teachings of Abraham Hicks. I think that should have been mentioned.

I partly disagree. It works if you understand how to use it and its limitations.

But you are absolutely right in the sense that wars are not won by themselves by positive thinking.

Attacking and destroying enemies work. For example, negative campaigning works and should be used more to attack the corporate enemy and their cronies.

How can you convince the sleeping mainstream population that something is very very wrong if you don’t tell them and provide them with facts, figures and arguments?

  13. David Marino says:

Positive thinking gets the ball rolling in the right direction and helps it stay on course. The action to reach your goals always comes from your will and and is continually powered by your beliefs. That is why there is such an effort by religion, governments, media, etc, to form and shape your beliefs. That is why there is a tremendous effort to break your will; an assault from all angles – public education, GMOs, vaccines, religion (it is God’s will, not yours), etc. You have to opt out of industrial society to avoid the assault.

  14. Many Possibilities says:

“And it doesn’t matter whether they are engaged in “changing their thoughts from negative to positive.” The law of attraction itself is irrelevant.”

For the law of attraction to work properly, 3 steps are required:
    1) identify your desire
    2) give your desire attention
    3) believe it.
In order to believe it, one has to remove resistance and doubt. The most common source of doubt is one’s own limiting beliefs. One important way to remove doubt is by identifying and eliminating one’s own limiting beliefs. Limiting beliefs are eliminated by creating and using allowing statements. There are 2 ways to know if your allowing statements are working. First, you feel a sense of relief and often hear yourself saying “Ah! This feels much better.” And second, you see evidence of your manifestation appearing in your life.

Thank you for writing this. It makes a lot of sense. It can be extremely aggravating living in a difficult situation such as disability, poverty etc and having smug self satisfied but basically privileged individuals tell you how you must just be a very negative person, or have terrible karma. Especially when you are a very optimistic, life affirming person persistently working to improve your life.
I find it particularly vexing when people born into huge privilege tell me working to end injustice, racism, poverty, war etc is pointless because those people chose their experiences and it’s not my place to interfere.
Life happens but what we do with it is what makes the difference. When we work together to overcome problems and limitations that IS magical and very often a strong belief, love and dedication can change and improve seemingly intractable problems both personally and globally.

  16. Rhiame says:

Thank you for this nice reminder regarding the Laws of Attraction, Intention and so forth. I’d like to add a comment though to clarify certain aspects: what part of me wants or does not want something, divides things into positive and negative, searches for pleasures, and runs away from displeasures? The ego, our inner control-freak persona that is always afraid and believes in death. This is this character in us that is seduced by the Law of Attraction and wants to believe in it because it wants to insure its physical survival through tangible means.

On the soul level, there is no positive or negative experiences since the soul cares only about the process and not the result – the being over the having. The soul is not locked in the survival program; it is immortal and invincible. Why does the Law of Attraction sometimes work and often does not? Because no matter how hard we try, in the end, it is never the ego that decides on the course of our life, it’s always the soul.

And the soul will bring only situations that are relevant to the evolution of our consciousness. If it’s through having a dream house or car, then that’s what will come to us and that’s we the Law of Attraction will ‘work’ – when the soul’s intention and the ego are aiming in the same direction.
Once we understand this basic principle, then it’s better to be on the side of the winner, it will make things much easier, instead of constantly fighting in vain. The fight slows us down in our evolution, drains us from our energy and makes us die faster.

Each time we resist, that we try to thwart the soul process because the ego wants to stay in control, situations keeps coming back again and again, a little bit stronger each time, until we have no other choice than to address the situation with awareness. It’s our resistance to our soul’s decision that creates suffering, which will make us say that this situation is negative.
If we decide to not let our ego control our life and to surrender to our soul’s will, then none of the situations are perceived as negative or positive: they all appear as perfect!

There is actually no such thing as a positive or negative thought. Thoughts are thoughts, like a cow is a cow. Thoughts are things that exist or don’t exist, as I exist or don’t exist. Am I positive or negative? Neither. There are things I like and things I dislike. Which of these is positive and which negative? Neither. There are only things I like and things I dislike. If I think, “I want some money,” and shortly thereafter, I come into some money, was my thinking positive or negative? Well, if we pair things I want with “positive” and things I don’t want with “negative,” then we will have to wait until all the cause/effect sequences have played themselves out before we can judge, because a “positive” today may be a “negative” tomorrow, and vice-versa. The money I fell into may cause me to buy something that harms me. Would that make the money acquisition negative or positive? We can’t know until the end of my life after all the cause/effect sequences have played to conclusions, especially if “harm” means negative and “not harm” means positive, and then it won’t matter because I won’t exist any longer on this plane. What is negative or positive is the electrical pole of an object that is charged, such as a wire in a radio or electrical circuit. However, when one obtains what one wants, there is nothing negative or positive about it, but one has simply obtained what one wants, or if one fails to obtain, then one has simply failed to obtain.

Is this me because deep down I feel I don’t deserve it? And have attracted rubbish? Hell no. No, no. Get out of here…It’s not the of attraction that is the dominant force here.
Can’t be because, for one thing, if I did find a home I know I would be happy. I wouldn’t be searching deep within me for the answer of how I feel, just to check whether my chakras were happy that I had found a comfy bed and room. No, I would just go into the room and say great! I wouldn’t need to take a photo of the home, put it on a positive affirmation board and stare at it everyday, just to make sure I gave off the vibe that I felt I deserved the new home. I would just order in the furniture and get on with living there. I wouldn’t need to stare at a photo of my new home just to prove to an all watching universe that my thoughts were align with ownership of a home, goddamit.

  27. A very interesting discussion after a very interesting article. What in my opinion is missing though – or did I overread it? – is the relevance of sharpening and strengething of one’s senses and therewith of one’s perception and possibilities of association, combined with a development of logical thinking and clear semantic discernment. Also art work of any kind. Become really good in one field – playing the guitar for instance, or making fine pottery – , and then, and already in the process of getting there, mix with people who are fine in painting or writing or number sequences and take in their experiences and methods and findings, tell your story and listen.
Recently, I have befriended an artist-craftsman who handmakes guitars. We talk about different chisels, the sharpening of those, I throw in my experiences as a stone mason, in between comes philosophy, come the meanings of basic sounds, symbols, words, and, of course, also in come the many lies that people are taught and believe. And, of course, I like to have a drink or two with painters. They show me their eyes. Don’t leave one stone unturned. It IS hard work. But the kind of reverie and laughter and pure life that leads to ever new dimensions is more than just a reward.
There may be those luckymen who get all they want easily, just by wishing and imagining it hither. I don’t think that Confucius or Bruno or Nietzsche were of their kin. Friedrich Schiller, even being famous already, a few times almost starved to death, was maybe even killed by a conspiracy his “friend” Goethe knew of. Cervantes had to grow very old for that time till he was recognized and had a small allowance for his last years. Heinrich von Kleist, one of the best of the German language ever, even shot himself in the head, at 34, in sheer despair because there was no success.
Look at Jon. He’s probably 75 by now, still works almost day and night. Is he really famous, making a lot of money? No, Justin Bieber is and does.
Did Justin Bieber foment better thoughts? Or, at least, believe better in what he does?

  30. Katherine says:

law of attraction always works. we just have the wrong interpretation of it. it is about the feelings of joy and freedom in whatever we are attracting. if something(thought, situation, material good, etc.) brings us a feeling of joy, then we are moving in that direction. but, also, we have the momentum we’ve built up in the 3D world, which is a fact. the built up momentum, that has been in motion in another unhappy direction, has to slow down and stop before the new direction can be fully realized. that means one must cease giving any attention to the unhappy direction, otherwise, it will never stop. this is the tricky part(speaking from experience). i think the law of attraction would be more accurately named the law of attention. because, it is what we put our attention on that grows stronger in our lives. we always have the choice of where to put our attention in any situation. and only happy, joyful feelings will support happy joyful results. but, it takes time for the energy to shift completely and return results in the physical world. meanwhile we must continue to put our attention on feeling wonderful. -simple, not easy. takes practice. and it feels weird at first. but, the more you do it, the more correct it feels and results will start to show in small ways, that you are aligning your own vibration(happy, joy feelings) with your desire and attention. want more details? just listen to some Abraham-Hicks talks. you can find them on YouTube … this is the link to the series on the Law of Attraction:

but, there is much more to listen to than just that. … have fun!

  31. Focault says:

What does science tell about the Law of Attraction? It tells that LoA doesn’t work. Do you need a proof by scientific evidence? Read this:

Just let scientists make their own work. For the sake of the truth, for the evolution of both our specie and our culture, please, don’t mix science with mystical woo.

People, I will always save my emotions. i’ll never force myself to think positive. I don’t need it. I’ve always earnt from my mistakes and sometimes even sufference was a useful tool for improving my life. I’ll never set aside someone because of negative thinking. I won’t fear to be contaminated by negative thinking, but I’ll listen people and I’ll try to offer my help. I don’t program my brain like a robot, I just use my heart, in a natural manner. How dare can we struggle for discovering the right way to use LoA, while so many people are starving? Don’t be selfish. If we think that LoA is useful, then let’s try to use it for knowing ourselves instead of wishing a new car. My life is wonderful, my wishes are normal. Friends, I don’t need LoA at all.

Jerry Hicks passed away because of cancer. Although he believed in LoA he used the mainstream medicine for trying to heal himself. Why? Perhaps because several people used LoA and died faster then the ones who used the mainstream medicine (eg. Kim Tinkham)?

    Best Regards
