My Experience inside the US Political System

As you know, I’ve launched weekly podcasts on my new substack page. Go over there and check it out. I appreciate all subscriptions.

That’s what substack is about—readers supporting individual writers. It’s the fastest growing platform of its kind in the world. And so far, zero censorship.

I’ve intentionally tested them with my first outpouring of articles on controversial subjects—and not a peep from them.

I’ve been doing substack for only a month, and already they’re listing me in the top hundred on the subject of Culture.

The new podcast is Culture in spades.

I tell the story of testifying before 2 Nevada State legislative Committees 20 years ago, during a spate of school shootings across America.

It was a surreal day, starting with the fact that I had no idea how or why I was invited to testify. I had nothing friendly to say to the Committees.

My background and research had to do with the dangers of the psychiatric drugs, particularly the antidepressants, which cause some people to spill over into violence—including murder.

That wasn’t on the list of ideas the Committees were looking for.

As the day wore on, I got a very strong dose of rejection from one Committee member—which was a joke to me, because I eat those sorts of political critiques for breakfast.

Most of all, I gained an extremely vivid and up-close impression of what these political animals were all about. And that’s the story I focus on in the podcast.

Who are these people? What is it like to be sitting and standing next to them and overhearing them talk, when the cameras aren’t there?

This is why I made the trip to Nevada—to find out. And I did.

I wanted to get in BEHIND the official nonsense, behind the political ideology, behind the appearance, to the reality on the ground. The reality that makes you want to take a shower as soon as you’re done.

It’s important to see and hear and feel these creatures in their native habitat.

At the time, I thought I should have a notebook with me, so I could jot down impressions and observations on the spot—but as soon as I stepped into the conference room where I’d address the first Committee, I knew that wouldn’t be necessary.

The whole scene unrolled like a magic carpet…minus the magic. I said to myself, “I’m never going to forget this.” And I haven’t.

Culture—such as it is today—is the main reason I started writing at substack. I wanted an outlet for everything I see moving around us that is transforming the past, present, and future.

My approach to it—full frontal attack, satire, surrealism, fiction—is all hands on deck. No holds barred.

There is no other way, as far as I’m concerned. We’re all in a circus, where the ringmasters are crazy and most of the audience is still asleep or drugged.

I just turned 84 last Saturday, and I’m still discovering new resources as a writer.

Thank you for your support. I hope more of you will go to my substack page and kick in a few bucks for a subscription.

LANGUAGE and STORY aren’t dead yet. I’m shooting them out there and expanding them with no limit.

A long time ago, I learned that when somebody says SURRENDER, you say NO DICE and you keep pushing, no matter what.

That’s what I’m doing.

    The Eternal City

    Where is the eternal city?
Rising from the blood of a mythical kill
    By Romulus of brother Remus
    Atop Palatine Hill,
    From the gory Coliseum
To the great temple of Venus
    Rome ruled the world
    Home to great poets,
    Brave legionnaires
    And wise old Stoics,
    From where grand Emperors
    Did rule the world
    With insight and wisdom,
    With blood lust
    And great hubris
    Ashes to ashes
    Dust to dust
And finally, when her hour grew late
    After so many epic battles
    And great triumphs of spirit
    The Barbarians stormed her gates,
    Now beyond the Myth
    Of the suckling twins
Rome’s eagle did take flight again
    Like some magical phoenix
    Rising from the ashes
    A new empire is borne
Against a field of star spangled dreams
    Where, today,
    The marching jackboots of obedience
    Stomp out freedom’s promise
    And from those wretched
    Sepulchers of concrete
    Scraping the skies
    Modern Neros without pity
    Fiddle with our fate,
    While fear now reigns supreme
    Where the masked gnomes
    Do kill our fondest dreams
Interred In graves six feet apart
And with the dawn of each new day
    The lionhearted
    Make their last stand
In the coliseum of the lost estate
    And in the throes
    Of this new world con
    The lambs are silent
As Caesar has crossed the Rubicon
Into the land of no pity
    Hail Caesar!
    Veni, Vidi, Vici
    Where is the Eternal city?

  5. Jim S. Smith says:

Happy (belated) Birthday, Jon! Eighty-four? That’s grand in and of itself.

    On that same Saturday,

I lost a dear friend and beloved companion. Fourteen months was way too short a time to enjoy what we had together, but that same fourteen months was probably worth more to him than a life time.

As to these “political animals” (very apropos description of them),

I have been around enough of them too – outside of their political capacities. Several of our senators, “representatives”, and two of our governors, along with several different city council members. These were just chance encounters – when I was still “living on the streets”. – They readily show very little empathy and compassion towards those who are just surviving with what little they have.

These politicians are a completely different creature, once you get to see their “normal” side, away from the public spotlight!

I have also met corporate executives – outside of their usual “haunts”. I also remember, when I used to drive taxi for a living, carrying folks like these from place to place. It is amazing what you learn from some of these people – from the perspective of a taxicab driver! Even had a few try to “sell” a particular way of thinking to me, only to their dissatisfaction. (I can think on my own, thank you!)

  6. DarkEyes says:

Congratulations, Mr. Rappoport, and many more happy years to come and stay in good health.

thank you for all your wonderful, enjoyable and educational articles.

  7. Christin says:

Hi Jon. Here I learned that it’s your birthday. Well…Happy Birthday!!!

I do not think this is appropriate, so perhaps you shouldn’t allow it…

Gore Vidal had interviewed poet Robert Frost some decades ago. Frost had read one of his poems at the JFK inauguration.

Vidal wrote that Frost was ready to “upbraid God” for His “…general cruelty to the human race…”

    What do you think?

  8. Roundball Shaman says:

There are critical times throughout history when a Prophet is called to rise up. And a Prophet does rise up to meet the color and temperature and needs of those Times.

‘The Times’ we all live in help to create a Prophet (or Prophets) who speaks to and from that time matrix. The circumstances of Life at a moment in history that ignite a certain Message and a Messenger that the World needs to hear. Right then and right now. The Times DEMAND it… and bear it.

Mr. Rappoport, you have been sharing critical messages of enlightenment for many decades. Valuable words and insights that have touched many lives for generations.

And yet – even at this stage of your life – you have been called again in a new way to speak to a World that has badly lost its way. To People who have lost their own way as well and who have forgotten what it means to be truly human… if They ever really knew it before in a World that seeks not to instruct and nurture but to confuse and disempower Them.

Your Message has taken on greater reach and wider importance these days than ever before.

‘History doesn’t repeat itself but it often rhymes’, the saying goes.

Well, maybe history DOES repeat. Because the human family doesn’t seem to change very much over the eons. The drives and conflicts and confusions and existential amnesia that has always plagued Humanity never seems to go away. We keep replaying the same tired song. A noise that won’t go away. Repetition that gets mind-numbing.

We as a human family seem to keep making the same mistakes and denying our Divine nature and rejecting the message of Imagination and Creativity in favor of Sameness and Laziness and Personal Gain and Ego and Promotion of Self over the message of Newness and Tapping Our Energies and Having Compassion and Empathy for Others. We keep deciding to live out and indulge our animal natures while at the same time turning our backs on our true Spiritual Selves. We elevate our behavioral stupidity and we relive it time and time again throughout the centuries as if was a badge of honor that must be passed down to the innocents that are born into this place of madness. And who get poisoned by the toxic lessons we pass down to them.

And into such Times rises a Prophet. Yes, even a Prophet who has been among us for many years.

It would be hard to find a higher personal calling than this. It would be hard to find Times that need to hear your Prophetic messages more than Our Times today do. It would near impossible to find People who so badly need to hear the gospel of Imagination and Creativity more than We do today because our very lives and existence are facing annihilation from Dark Forces who are hell bent on our destruction.

When the Time is right… a Prophet does indeed rise among us. May we find enough left of our humanity so we are still able to… listen… and heed The Message of the Prophet.

  9. Mischa says:

Thank you for your great writing, it inspires my life and art regularly. I read your work nearly everyday, and I’ll continue to as long as it’s legal!

    Happy birthday, and best wishes!

  10. maria says:

Well said Roundball. Appreciate your posts.

We get drawn into the cruel heritage of past crimes and normalize to a system of sadistic behavior. The culture around us absorbs our time and tires our energy. We are full of worry and uncertainty.

If we break with the world around – we come to.

If we don’t we break apart.

The prophet is an enigmatic figure often at odds with those creating rules of reality to please themselves. Who understand the creation as merchandise.

Prophesy is about vision, seers – those who can see. Envision in the mind’s eye, order the images.

There are imaginations of untold beauty called for.

    • Roundball Shaman says:

Many People go through their lives waiting for Life to give them a miracle. When in fact, each of us is ALREADY a miracle. And Life and the Universe is our playground and designated place and canvass for US to BRING miracles TO Life.

And since Reality conforms and responds to our expectations of It, when we act as the Miracles we are… Life responds back with some miracles of its own.

    • Christina says:

The beauty is the flowers and the children.
