This research and work, along with the work for its companion collection, Exit From the Matrix, took 25 years.

It started, in earnest, when I met hypnotherapist Jack True, in 1986. I was four years into a career as a freelance reporter.

A mutual friend introduced us in the UCLA Biomedical Library on a Saturday afternoon. Jack didn’t waste any time. He led me down into the lower stacks, where bound volumes of medical journals stood on shelves. He pulled out a few volumes.

He showed me studies that indicated the diagnostic tests for detecting HIV, the reputed cause of AIDS, were highly flawed.

This is just a sample,” he said. “I wanted to show you you can find medical insanity in their own journals. It’s everywhere.”

He looked around us.

You should write a book on the scientific fraud called AIDS,” he said.

We were off to the races. A week later, Jack introduced me to a publisher, and we struck a deal in an hour in a coffee shop in West LA.

In 1988, the book was published: AIDS Inc., Scandal of the Century. The full text is included in The Matrix Revealed.

During the writing of AIDS Inc., I learned about many medical frauds of the highest order. The walls of my small LA apartment were jammed with notes and reminders and journal citations. I taped them, tacked them, and stapled them there so I’d always have them in front of me. That was my filing system.

I was amazed at how much of my college training in logic came back to me. I needed every bit of it to navigate the lies, the false trails, the rank fraud, and the cover stories that obscured the true meaning of what I was researching.

Years later, when I put together The Matrix Revealed, I included my own logic course, knowing what essential knowledge is contained in that discipline, first codified by Aristotle.

As I was finishing the book, Jack True mentioned that he’d like to sit down and engage in a series of formal conversations, interviews, on his own work in hypnosis and deprogramming.

I eagerly agreed. It was the beginning of a period of exceptionally exciting mutual research on the mind. Jack, who died in the early 1990s, was a genius in his field. His insights are unparalleled. I included 43 of these interviews (320 pages) in The Matrix Revealed.

He said to me once, “I stopped doing hypnosis when I realized that my patients coming through the door were already hypnotized in a very deep place. I began to develop ways to wake them up. This led me into areas of what’s called paranormal ability—it’s really quite normal. People are living a sub-normal dream of very convincing quality. That dream is what people call their minds…”

A week or two after AIDS Inc. was published, Jack told me the book was on its way, in a diplomatic pouch, to Russia. He had a friend who’d sent it off. Apparently, the Russians were quite interested in potential research fraud at the US National Institutes of Health.

I never heard back from Russia, although I did have a brief correspondence with Jakob Segal, an East German biologist, who rejected US research on AIDS. He wrote me an interesting letter. I replied, pointing out what I considered were flaws in his own analysis. He didn’t answer.


The Matrix Revealed


Jack True made one further connection for me. It proved to be one of the most important of my life. He introduced me to a man who went by the name of Ellis Medavoy (pseudonym).

Ellis had been impressed by my book. It turned out he was a retired propaganda operative—and not just any operative. He’d carried out some of the most important psyops of our time, along with his colleagues.

Ellis was ready to talk off the record, in detail. Once I confirmed his background, he and I began a series of interviews. One of the first things he told me was: “Most propagandists are hacks. I want to give you the full story of how it’s done, how it works, and why it works. To grasp that, you need to understand the mind in a different way…”

In The Matrix Revealed, I’ve included 28 interviews with Ellis (290 pages). Together with Jack, these conversations convinced me to go digging further into the ancient fabled civilization of Tibet, before it became a theocracy saddled with control and a whole pile of metaphysical baggage.

I was very happy to confirm that core principles of Tibetan spiritual exercises dovetailed very well with what Jack True and Ellis Medavoy were revealing about mind programming and how the Matrix operates, in the external and internal worlds.

So these are a few of the threads that led me to put together The Matrix Revealed, and to stand firm, over these last years, on what I’ve learned.

I started out as a reporter…and eventually realized how wide and deep the field really is.

The worn document has passed from hand to hand in the underground. The title? “Life in the Pleasure Dome.”

Its date of publication is uncertain, owing to the torrid years of revolution and state repression. Most estimates place it at 2067.

The man who signed it is long forgotten, but it’s rumored he’d worked for the US Department of Control (aka “Sphincter”), an offshoot of the old Homeland Security Force.

He was, perhaps, a scientist with special access to the President, the Congress, and the Pentagon.

Why is this document so important? Because it mirrors recent developments—in particular, the mass drugging of the population, under the guise of mental health care.

From page 56 of the document: “The aim of the New American Order must be the reduction of pain and suffering, in favor of pleasure. The population must glimpse light at the end of the tunnel. New drugs in the research pipeline must deliver pleasure at a level that cannot be denied or ignored by the user.”

Many people believe in the current drugging program. They feel the pleasure. They are satisfied with their lives, regardless of external conditions.

But on page 294, we see the underpinning of the whole program:

Pleasure alone is not enough. There must be an accompanying belief that the satisfaction-quotient these drugs create is acceptable, is a ceiling on what is possible in a life lived.

For that, we need a general lowering of expectation, because the drugs cannot stimulate the kind of pleasure that comes with holding ideals such as freedom, independence, power, and imagination.

These ideals must be eradicated. Then the drugs will suffice. Then the pleasure they bring will seem to be enough.”

In other words, a person who is still conscious of his own innate freedom, power, and independence will experience profound pleasure. The drugs do not and cannot deliver sensation at that level.

Therefore, our leaders state, the consciousness of freedom, power, and independence must be wiped out in the population.

In the underground, we know such a program is underway. It has been operating for many years.

As evidence, I point to the standard federal review form, X-12f-B, which is a series of questions put to every student in the United States before he graduates high school, and to every person in the country during a job interview of any kind, as well as to every person who applies for government benefits.

Buried in this standard form are the following:

When was the last time you felt free? What year?”

Did you feel free when you were a child?”

Has anyone told you you should be free?”

An interviewer asks these three key questions to every American. If the answers suggest that the interviewee does, or once did, feel free, he will, sooner or later, be shunted into the so-called Road System, which is an untrained and unprotected workforce sent to toxic waste areas to do cleanup, on a seven-year federal contract.

Then we have the federal psych eval network, which functions as an offshoot of the NSA Home and Workplace Surveillance Anti-Crime Mandate (NHWSACM).

By electronic means, through remote brain scans, a belief-system profile is assembled on all Americans. Among other assessments, this profile determines to what degree people have any deeply held

convictions.

The content of such beliefs doesn’t matter. What matters is the level of commitment to the beliefs.

The underground has learned that these profiles are used to identify Americans who still have deep faith in anything. Those who do are placed in several different types of grinding manual labor forces.

The whole idea is to separate and wall off “believers” of any kind from the general population.

Over time, the people of America will, presumably, accept the pleasure drugs as the highest form of life.

The drugs will become the ideals.

What the drugs impart will be the only recognized “higher pleasure.”

There will be nothing else.

That is why we in the underground have developed an antidote. It is based on an old formula which has been wiped from all public and private records.


Exit From the Matrix


It used to be called “organic.”

That term is now outlawed.

We now use “Organic” to indicate a secret vegetable concentrate, which will offset some of the effects of the pleasure drugs.

We grow the vegetables in hundreds of hidden places on the planet, and we are dispensing the concentrate widely. If we are discovered and captured, we will disappear.

The aim of our plan is simple. If enough people, ingesting the Organic, experience less pleasure from the drugs, they will wake up and see that their lives can encompass More.

Watch out for agents of the FDA. They are legion. Even if they are not wearing SWAT uniforms and armor, they carry weapons. The younger agents were raised, from childhood, in breeding facilities, and they have never eaten vegetables…they were trained to consider them vile poisons.

These breeding centers are funded and run by the Grocery Manufacturers Association. Apparently, the GMA used to be a money-laundering crime family, which secretly raised money to promote genetically modified food, when Earth still sustained non-GMO crops.

Now, they are officially a department of the combined FDA-USDA Strike Force. They deploy drones, and they also go on door-to-door searches.

Just last month, in Madison, Wisconsin, a group of dissident students, upon observing five agents moving door to door in an off-campus housing district, displayed bunches of broccoli and spinach—before the agents could draw their weapons—and induced a panic.

Three agents suffered strokes, and a fourth ran to a city fluoride holding tank, dove in and drowned.

One student shouted: THIS IS HOW WE DEAL WITH VAMPIRES!

US government shipped bio/chem weapons? Absurd!

I know. History is boring. People hate it.

What happened 25 years ago? Forget it. What’s going on with Miley Cyrus? Is she still twerking?”

Nevertheless, I’ll give it a try.

Keep two twerks in mind. In 1975, the US signed on to an international treaty banning the production, use, and stockpiling of biological weapons. Ditto for chemical weapons, in 1993. Another treaty.

Here’s a twerky quote from the Washington Post (9/4/13, “When the US looked the other way on chemical weapons”): “…The administrations of Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush authorized the sale to Iraq of numerous items…including poisonous chemicals and deadly biological viruses, such as anthrax and bubonic plague…”

And now, here’s a flurry of boggling twerks…

Twerk One: Between 1985 and 1989, a US 501C3 firm, American Type Culture Collection, sent Iraq up to 70 shipments of various biowar agents, including 21 strains of anthrax.

Twerk Two: Between 1984 and 1989, the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) sent Iraq at least 80 different biowar agents, including botulinum toxoid, dengue virus, and West Nile antigen and antibody.

This information on the American Type Culture Collection and the CDC comes from a report, IRAQ’S BIOLOGICAL WEAPONS PROGRAM, prepared by the Center for Nonproliferation Studies. The report contains ample reference citations.

Twerk Three: Then we have a comprehensive article by William Blum in the April 1998 Progressive called ANTHRAX EXPORT. Blum cites a 1994 Senate report confirming that, in this 1985-1989 time period, US shipments of anthrax and other biowar agents to Iraq were licensed by…drum roll, cymbal crash…the US Dept. of Commerce.

Twerk Four: Blum quotes from the Senate report: “These biological materials were not attenuated or weakened and were capable of reproduction. It was later learned that these microorganisms exported by the United States were identical to those the United Nations inspectors found and removed from the Iraqi biological warfare program.” Boom.

Twerk Five: This 1994 Senate report also indicates that the US exported to Iraq the precursors for chemwar agents, actual PLANS for chemical and biowar production facilities, and chemical-warhead filling equipment. The exports continued until at least November 28, 1989.

Twerk Six: Blum lists a few other biowar agents the US shipped to Iraq. Histoplasma Capsulatum, Brucella Melitensis, Clostridium Perfringens, Clostridium tetani–as well as E. coli, various genetic materials, human and bacterial DNA.

Twerk Seven (the cover-up): Blum also points out that a 1994 Pentagon report dismissed any connection between all these biowar agents and Gulf War Illness. But the researcher who headed up that study, Joshua Lederberg, was actually a director of the US firm that had provided the most biowar material to Iraq in the 1980s: the American Type Culture Collection.

Twerk Eight (one hand washes the other): Newsday revealed that the CEO of the American Type Culture Collection was a member of the US Dept. of Commerce’s Technical Advisory Committee. See, the Dept. of Commerce had to license and approve all those exports of biowar agents carried out by the American Type Culture Collection. Get the picture?

Now, as to other US companies which dealt biowar or chemwar agents to Iraq–all such sales having been okayed by the US government–the names of these companies are contained in records of the 1992 Senate hearings, “United States export policy toward Iraq prior to Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait”:

Twerk Nine (the names of US criminal companies): Mouse Master (Georgia), Sullaire Corp (Charlotte, North Carolina), Pure Aire (Charlotte, North Carolina), Posi Seal (Conn.), Union Carbide (Conn.), Evapco (Maryland), BDM Corp (Virginia), Spectra Physics (Calif.).

There are about a dozen more.

Twerk Ten (dept. of mind-boggling excuses): Hewlett Packard said that the recipient of its shipments, Saad 16, was some sort of school in Iraq. But in 1990, the Wall St. Journal stated that Saad 16 was a “heavily fortified, state-of-the-art [Iraqi] complex for aircraft construction, missile design, and, almost certainly, nuclear-weapons research.”

Twerk Eleven: There has been a considerable debate about whether Saddam hid some of his bio/chem weapons in Syria, to evade UN weapons inspectors. If he did, then is it possible the current situation in Syria has a few of its roots in the US? Is it possible some of Syria’s WMDs originally came from America?

One thing is certain. A US government investigation isn’t going look into that possibility.

On a fall day in 2043, in a little town called Donut, outside Federal City, Kansas, a man called Dr. X, who worked for DARPA, the Pentagon’s advanced tech branch, clicked a mouse.

Instantly, 90 million invisible electromagnetic arches sprang up out of nowhere across America.

The arches spanned highways and streets and roads; airports, train and bus stations; government buildings; office skyscrapers, malls, plazas; military bases and police stations; houses, apartment buildings, hospitals; national border crossings.

These arches hummed quietly with energies that “represented” three central ideas. The energies were translations of those ideas:

GIVE EVERYTHING TO EVERYBODY ALL THE TIME;

OBEY THE GOVERNMENT;

BE HAPPY.

Through an ingenious series of algorithms Dr. X and his team developed, every human who passed under the arches was read and probed, to determine whether he/she resonated with those three fundamental precepts.

Every human was subsequently labeled with AGREE or DISAGREE, as a final judgment.

The DISAGREE persons—their names and personal information—were instantly registered at an NSA facility in the desert outside Las Vegas.

Surveillance on them would be stepped up. In many cases, they would subjected to forms of electronic harassment.

For the first month of the new program, Dr. X and his people were jubilant about the results. Everything was working smoothly.

Then, on the 41st day, something happened. A man walking along a road outside Santa Barbara, California, passed under an arch and …the DARPA sensors recorded nothing.

They didn’t record AGREE or DISAGREE.

Impossible, but true.

How can that be?” Dr. X said to his team. “It’s one or the other.”

Three days later, a preliminary assessment of the man came back to him:

This person appears to exceed all the parameters of our system. He’s essentially a ghost. He operates on ‘other frequencies.’”

Dr. X pondered the implications.

This man,” he wrote, “neither assents or dissents from the three basic precepts. He has no humanity. He’s his own kind of machine.”

The order went out, and the man was arrested in his apartment and brought to a testing lab in Bethesda, Maryland.

Dr. X oversaw multiple scans done on his brain. They revealed a number of extraordinary and unprecedented patterns.

After a few sleepless nights, Dr. X came up with a revolutionary idea. This man could become the template for a new human. An “entirely dead but alive” model.

If every person on Earth could be electronically adjusted to resemble “the ghost” in all ways, there would be no need for surveillance or harassment. The whole planet would live as docile specimens forever, under the leadership of the chosen ones.


Exit From the Matrix


It took six years to convince the major power players to go along with the plan, but the payoff was so great, how could they refuse?

And so, on July 4, 2056, after a) the invisible arches had been extended to every corner of the world, and b) the output of the arches had been altered radically, so they would change the brain activity of every human at a deep level, to match “the ghost,” Dr. X clicked his mouse for a second momentous time.

Except that…he and his colleagues had made a grievous error.

The man walking on a road outside Santa Barbara, the ghost, the non-responding “dead man,” was not dead at all.

In the lab in Bethesda, they had tried to make him talk, but he wouldn’t utter a word. They didn’t want to coerce him, for fear that they might injure his state of mind. They wanted to keep him in a pristine state so they could study him further.

But the man was being silent because he was utterly uninterested in his captors. He wasn’t addled or ill. He wasn’t crazy. He wasn’t cold. He wasn’t a criminal.

He wasn’t brainwashed. He wasn’t under some spell. He wasn’t a machine.

He was of a quality that had long been forgotten.

He was merely free and independent, going his own way, as preposterous as that might seem.

And so when Dr. X clicked his mouse for the second time, he triggered billions and billions of buried memories in billions of people.

Memories of being free.

The response to this was uneven, to be sure, but the net effect was the explosion of what later came to be called, “an era of fertile chaos.”

Life was never the same.

Control was never the same.

These two sentences are engraved on the headstone of Dr. X who, after his suicide, was buried in a field in Kansas.

How the Matrix deals with power

I’ve been asked to reprint this piece.

Here it is a with a new brief introduction.

Most people use memory to explain why they’re living the lives they have. They arrange memories as if they’re symbols, and the sum is: this is the life I have; no other.

If you could somehow take away all those memories and insert a whole new synthetic raft, people would arrange those to come to the same conclusion. And the same life.

So it is with the world. People look out at it and decide, on some subterranean level, that the world dictates what degree of choice and power they possess.

Put them in a different home, a different city, on a different planet, and they would eventually settle on the same assessment of their power: small.

In that sense (and many others), memory and the world are constructs the individual ingests, arranges, and builds to suit and fortify his conception of his “geometry”: the shape of his life.

In previous articles, I’ve been making clear how THE VOICE narrates the story of our times through television anchorage.

The elite anchor is groomed to be able to induce a seamless hypnotic trance in viewers and make HIS voice THEIR voice.

There is power in a voice.

A voice can change reality.

Your voice is the voice that destroys the narrative that has been sculpted for us. Your voice is the voice that rolls over the voice of the elite anchor and the other elite leaders who speak for us.

When your voice become your VOICE, you connect with something oceanic that rips away false separations and false systems and false ideas and deserts of sand on which our fake reality is built.

We pretend to be small. We pretend to be whispers. We pretend to be confused. We pretend to be creatures living inside the space of this deluded society. We pretend to be clueless. We pretend to have such limited power.

We pretend.

We pretend that some overriding system or structure SUPERSEDES OUR OWN VOICE. We bow down to that system, and then we see what that does to our own power. It diminishes it. It makes our voice small. It makes our voice thin. It makes us into weaklings.

It makes us walled off from each other, from THE REAL EACH OTHER. The real each other is each one of us with power, with A VOICE.

The word “rant” is interesting to analyze. It originally referred to someone speaking in a completely unhinged way. Its recent online meaning was invented by tech heads, who adopt a “cool” attitude toward problems and answers. These cerebral types consider any outward display of passion or outrage to be a rant. For them, the “ranting voice” is suspect.

Try this experiment. Find a piece of writing you love that expresses great passion and poetry. Read it out loud while you’re alone. Read it out loud 50 times over the course of a few days. Inject your own passion into the words. If you’re not already lying in a coffin, something unexpected will happen to you. You’ll find yourself coming alive in a larger way. You’ll experience glimpses of your VOICE.

This has to do with BEING ALIVE.

You’ll experience the absence of little structures and systems.

Keep reading that passage over and over. Put everything you have into it. Don’t stint. Put more and more feeling into it.

Then, watch the evening network news. Listen to the tone of the anchor. Pay attention to how he establishes a continuity. No matter how absurd you thought the evening news was, you’ll now comprehend that absurdity from an entirely new perspective.

As you expand your own VOICE, and as you EXPRESS WHAT YOU TRULY WANT TO EXPRESS—-YOUR OWN THOUGHTS, YOUR OWN IDEAS, YOUR OWN FEELINGS, YOUR OWN INVENTIONS—you are cutting away layers of stagnant consciousness. Each one of those layers says: “reality is THIS.” Each layer has a different restrictive portrait of reality, and as it disintegrates and tumbles away into space, you become freer.

The VOICE.

A path to greater power, greater aliveness, greater empathy, greater engagement, greater self, greater community, greater wholeness.

Your voice, not the anchor’s voice. The anchor’s voice operates on behalf of the established corrupt order, as a mesmerizing tool. Your VOICE liberates you and others.

Many years ago, I was teaching a small class in a school in New York. The kids were all retreads from other schools, where they didn’t make it for a variety of reasons.

They were in a constant state of distraction. Unteachable.

So I picked a short passage from a poem by Dylan Thomas. A few lines. A few great lines. I had each student read the passage out loud. Then we all read it together. Then we went around and around with each child reading it again—I urged more feeling, more expression.

It was like trying to break through an iron ceiling. Each kid read the lines in a monotone. It was eerie, as if they were all in a trance. But I kept going anyway.

Nothing doing. Nothing happening.

Then I said, “I’m going to read these lines like a newscaster would read them.” I gave a pretty good impression of an anchor.

The kids cracked up. They thought it was very funny. They immediately grasped how ridiculous the anchor’s voice sounded trying to give feeling to poetry.

The kids began reading those lines as if they were news anchors. They had a great time with it. That’s what broke the ice.

Now,” I said, “stop conning me. Read the lines with your own feeling. Come on. Put something into it.”

And they did.

Around and around we went. Each kid must have read those lines a dozen more times. They got into it. They shed their embarrassment.

The VOICES that emerged that day in class convinced me that everyone has a VOICE, and it cuts through layers of conditioning like a knife through butter, once it’s unleashed.

These kids were titanic.

When we were done (I was reading the lines too), we all sat there and looked at each other in amazement. We knew. We knew we had cracked the egg. The spell of “flat reality” had been broken. We were all alive in a new way.

The famous lines we read?

Do not go gentle into that good night,

Old age should burn and rave at close of day;

Rage, rage, against the dying of the light.

Though wise men at their end know dark is right,

Because their words had forked no lightning they

Do not go gentle into that good night…

Although the overall sentiment of that poem might appear to be a kind of futility, when we read the lines over and over, WE came to a different place. A place where we knew that our words COULD fork lightning.

And then we read, from Fern Hill:

Now as I was young and easy under the apple boughs

About the lilting house and happy as the grass was green,

The night above the dingle starry,

Time let me hail and climb

Golden in the heydays of his eyes,

And honoured among wagons I was prince of the apple towns

And once below a time I lordly had the trees and leaves

Trail with daises and barley

Down the rivers of the windfall light…

the calves

Sang to my horn, the

Foxes on the hills barked clear and cold,

And the Sabbath rang slowly

In the pebbles of the holy streams.

To be astonished by something you see on a screen is one thing. To be astonished by what your VOICE can establish is light years beyond that.

Obama has no one to blame but himself:

He was the one who campaigned, in 2008, on Hope and Change. He was the one who deployed high-flying rhetoric to promise a new day in Washington politics.

He was the one who said he was going elevate the level of discourse and make government transparent. He positioned himself as a new kind of leader. He was the one who turned his candidacy into a religious experience.

He was the one who convinced voters he stood above the fray, as a man and as a symbol, and on that basis they boarded his train and rode it all the way.

He was the one who, inheriting a desperate economy, made his signature move upon gaining office:

Obamacare.

Not jobs. Not prosecutions of corporate and banking criminals.

He made devastating choices for all Americans.

He was and is the one who has presided over a sinking economic ship.

Given his proclivity for big and bigger government, he could have launched a serious public program, one which really put people back to work, repairing the infrastructure of the nation. But even this was beyond him.

And getting out of the way and letting Americans expand their small businesses, and supporting them with the same intensity of rhetoric he used to win his election? Out of the question. Not in the playbook. Not for a second.

His big play out of the gate, Obamacare, shocked his closest advisers. They assumed jobs would be his number-one priority. They were dead wrong.

And what about “post-racial” America? That was not only a dud, it was a disaster. Division and polarization are the order of the day.

How about dependence, and government as the solver of all problems, as the beneficent giver? How has that worked out? How can it possibly work out? America is going to become one big Sweden? Really?

It’s one thing for a Clinton or a Bush to lie and skate and divert and play the usual horrific games. But Obama set himself up as a man who was fundamentally different. That was his ace. That was how he won the Presidency. That was what people bought into.

So he falls further, even as his media supporters keep launching blizzards of lies to prop him up.

Many of his loyal followers believe “powerful forces” have fenced Obama in and sabotaged his efforts to work positive transformations. If so, then as a transcendent figure, he should step forward and use his oratorical powers to expose the criminal enterprise that surrounds the Presidency. He should speak directly to the American people and lay it on the line.

Or else he confesses that he is, in fact, another Clinton, another Bush.

The public loves fairy tales and myths, but considering the shape this country is in, that fascination is wearing very thin. It isn’t going to sustain the next three years of Obama in the White House.


The Matrix Revealed


90 million people are out of the work force. 50 million are on food stamps. Recovery? Is the President really going to keep pushing that narrative?

Admitting the truth might, as a long shot, create a platform from which Obama could launch a real campaign to restore jobs…but faking the unemployment crisis has been his chosen path.

The government Obamacare website is a shambles. It doesn’t appear that a simple fix is possible, which means chaos will continue for many months, perhaps longer. Private insurance companies are canceling hundreds of thousands of policies.

The last seven years of American political life have added up to a disaster. Blaming it all on Congressional gridlock, on delaying the ability of the White House to invent trillions more in debt at the drop of a hat, isn’t working.

So many actions and omissions of madness…it leaves us with the reasonable conclusion that Obama’s Presidency was designed from the outset to flame out and fail.

And the principal target was the economy.

The President, fresh off an election victory in 2008, and in that glow, could have used his monumental leverage to put people back to work. He could have hammered on it day and night. He could have rallied support and energized the country.

But now…what do we have? Welfare America to the nth degree. Beyond what anyone thought was possible. And media traitors are backing it.

For decades, for more than a hundred years, power has been in the wrong place.

It belongs with you and with me.

Time and time again, we come back to this: the core of the individual human being is creative power, imagination, invention.

Through the ongoing process of the creative act, an individual moves higher and deeper into uniqueness. In the long, long run, everything else turns out to be a short-circuited consensus, an attachment to a story told by someone else.

Basically, the mechanical structure of consensus is derived from the concept that:

Everything is connected to everything.

This notion is increasingly hailed as a positive marvel. For example, in quantum entanglement, paired particles, even at great distances from each other, both react to an impact on either particle.

Everything/connected” produces a sensation of Weave&All Inclusiveness.

It’s ultimately designed for long-term rental. The occupant is there, and there he will stay.

Feeling this “everything is connected to everything” is meant to instill a sense of the sacred. The mind completes the equation: sacred=forever.

But this kind of “sacred” is no more forever than listening to a Bach concerto is forever. It’s one thing to bathe in a majestic feeling. It’s quite another thing to infer it means eternal occupancy.

There are many people ready to shake your hand and embrace you and welcome you into the labyrinth, the weave, the connection of everything to everything.

People aspire to be wired into the “everything/connected” apparatus as their highest ambition—which is their primary substitute for imagination.

That they don’t realize this doesn’t make it any less true.

Let’s say you’re an actor. You work in a repertory theater that stages 100 plays. In each play, you have a role, a different role. You’re “connected” to each one of those roles. BUT YOU’RE AN ACTOR. That means you can inhabit a role and then take it off like a coat.

However, this distinction is lost on most people. When they hear that “everything is everything,” they grab that role and hold on to it and move in, lock, stock, and barrel, hoping it will be forever.

The idea of “everything/connected” is quite old. You can find it enunciated in ancient Egypt and China, and traces of it exist in Aristotle. It’s sometimes arranged as a hierarchy. The “great chain of being.”

So are we talking about an architecture of the universe or a notion in the mind?

Think of “everything/connected” as a style of building among various possible styles.

And its goal is the inducement of awe. That is the stage play.

People join the “everything/connected” church. They want to be in that congregation.

When you take apart the “everything is everything,” it’s not as sensational as it first seemed.


The Matrix Revealed


Let’s pretend that a few Chinese sages, long ago, decided to float a trial balloon.

They spread the word that opposites could resolve in a state of harmony (everything connected). Each polarity could reflect the other.

It was a poetic thought that might be embedded in a few verses.

The sages watched and waited. Eventually, they saw that this fancy had taken hold. In fact, it had become embedded in a philosophy. It was now being discussed as a principle of the universe, the cosmos.

The sages were shocked but not surprised. Humans exhibit strange fetishes.

What started out as a poet’s passing rumination on a summer afternoon—entertained purely for the purpose of writing verse—was now an all-embracing weave of metaphysical consensus.

I use this as an illustration of “piling on”—adding one piece of imaginative art to another, on and on, and inferring that the sum is Ultimate Reality (consensus).

Richard Jenkins, the extraordinary healer I write about in The Secret Behind Secret Societies (part of the Exit From the Matrix collection), once told me, “Most people aren’t satisfied with just two or three myths. They have to keep adding new ones. It’s like children with dolls and clothes. You’ve got to have more outfits.”

Nearly 40 years ago, I rented a garage in Santa Monica and turned it into a studio. It was small, and I wanted to paint large. I stretched three canvases, the biggest of which was 15×8 feet. Because there wasn’t enough room in the studio, I kept painting over that canvas.

Six months later, I had done perhaps 15 paintings on the one canvas—each painting covering the one before it. I’d used all sorts of paints—acrylic, oil, enamel. Finally, I painted the whole thing black.

I looked at the black space for a few days, and I noticed there was a small glint of light green peeking through in the lower left.

I worked at the area with my fingernails, and suddenly a two-foot section of black came away like a swath of rubber, exposing many colors and shapes, which were intact.

I realized that, because I’d used different kinds of paint, the layers hadn’t adhered perfectly.

For the next week, using a screwdriver and a mallet, I uncovered painting after painting, going back in time.

Eventually, I settled on a painting composed of several layers. I liked it.


Exit From the Matrix


If I had been a devotee, I would have fallen on my knees at that point. I would have, for the moment, been happy I’d determined how many layers (myths) were necessary to give me the One Painting For All Time. The permanent fixed reality.

But it was a painting. And of course, since I was the artist, I knew that.

Consensus reality endures because there is an audience for it.

And audience is fascinated by, and glued to, STORY.

For example, the hero is faced with a problem which turns into a mystery, and he then penetrates the mystery after much work and danger—during which time his friends lose faith in him—and finally he does away with the villain at the heart of the mystery…

WHATEVER KEEPS AUDIENCE BEING ONLY AUDIENCE KEEPS CONSENSUS REALITY IN PLACE.

For the most part, audience wants to remain being audience, and it will search for and rationalize ways to do just that.

Story has beginning, middle, and end. This pattern, so obvious and universal, is rarely thought about, but it creates a trance. Try writing a story without that sequence and see how many people want it.

I’m audience, and I want beginning, middle, and end, over and over.”

Part of being audience is experiencing the letdown that happens after the story ends. This depression stimulates the need for another story. And on and on it goes. But the letdown, at a deeper subconscious level, is really about a dissatisfaction with the WHOLE PATTERN of story—people want to break out of that. They want to conquer that addiction.

And how is that done?

Well, the first step is being able to invent stories of your own.

And this is where people balk.

At a conference some years ago, I gave a talk about freedom. In the middle of the talk, I told the audience we were going to do a few exercises that would possibly stimulate their sense of freedom. The very notion that I was asking them to DO something, to come out of their audience-trance…which they hadn’t expected, caused a stir, a sense of apprehension. They were programmed for beginning, middle, and end—and I was suddenly shredding that.

They had planned on being entertained with the notion of freedom.

After the lecture, a friend of mine came up to me and said, “Did you catch what happened there, when you told them you were going to have them do exercises?”

Sure,” I said. “I did it on purpose.”

AUDIENCE DOESN’T INVENT.

THEY EXPERIENCE.

AND THAT’S WHAT THEY WANT.

MATRIX.

What happened when an actor wanted to launch a political career and become governor? The whole news division of a major network surrendered itself, for one ratings-busting night, to a talk show.

Now that ex-governor, Arnold, born in Austria, apparently wants to change the law so he’s qualified to become the next President of the United States.

As a resident of Kalifornia, my memory of Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is dim. He got fatter. He confessed to cheating on his wife and fathering a child with the housekeeper. He mainly carried on in the fine tradition of sinking CA deeper into bureaucratic muck and insolvency.

Muck is a requirement of the job.

Each new governor is guided into a secret room where, among heavily armed androids, he’s told: “Your orders are to screw this whole state up worse or you’re dead, understand?”

Several years ago, I looked into how Arnold won the governor’s race. It all came down to his famous appearance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, where he announced that he was going to run.

I obtained a copy of show, watched it many times, and transcribed the dialogue and noted the audience reactions.

Breaking down the segments revealed what happens when news and entertainment and PR and political advocacy all blur together in a single wave.

The show had been hyped as the moment when Arnold would announce whether he was going to run in the recall election against California Governor Gray Davis.

The public anticipation was sky-high. No one seemed concerned that NBC was turning over its news division, for one night, to its entertainment division.

This was precisely the subject of the best movie ever made about television, Paddy Chayefsky’s Network. That didn’t register with the national media, either.

If Arnold decided to run, he wouldn’t be announcing it at a stale press conference at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel, after a brief introduction from The Snoozer, LA Mayor Richard Riordan. No, Arnold would obtain a rocket boost from Jay Leno.

Keep in mind that talk shows warm up and prep their studio audiences to act and respond with amphetamine-like enthusiasm.

And then that audience transmits its glow and howling racket to the wider television audience, thereby blowing an artificially enhanced event across the landscape.

On the night of August 6, 2003, Tonight Show host Jay Leno devoted two six-minute segments to The Arnold.

Of course, it was more than an interview. Jay had been touting this night as the occasion for a key revelation in the comic play called the California Recall.

Arnold would say yes or Arnold would say no. He would run for governor or he would decline.

Bigger than conventional news, Arnold strode out on to Jay’s stage. A Tonight Show camera picked him up from a grossly complimentary low angle, making him appear even larger and more physically imposing than he is. Jay was positioned standing behind him, applauding, lending an affirmative gloss to the entrance. Already, it looked and felt political.

This was not a beginning; the impression was of something already in motion, a train to catch up with.

As the man of the hour sat down next to Jay, he commented that there was a big audience in the house (“Can you believe all these people here?”) and, capping his first gambit, he stated that every one of them was running for governor of California. Ha ha. (At one point, there were 135 gubernatorial candidates.)

Quickly, Jay gets down to business. The business of making the evening extra-special: “Now, I don’t think we’ve ever had this much press at The Tonight Show for any—[let’s look at] our press room—normally [the press] sit in the audience.”

Cut to a stark room, shot from above. About 40 reporters doing almost nothing at tables. Obviously, the room was set up for this event.

Jay cracks a couple of jokes about the press gaggle, lowers his voice and turns his full attention to Arnold: “…it’s been weeks…and people going back and forth…taken you awhile, and you said you would come here tonight and tell us your decision. So what is your decision?”

Arnold replies, “Well, Jay, after thinking for a long time, my decision is…”

The sound cuts off, and the TV screen displays an old PLEASE STAND BY notice. Thick white letters against a background of an ancient station test pattern from the 1950s. A mechanical tone plays for several seconds.

The audience laughs. There is applause, too.

Cut back to Jay and Arnold. Arnold says, “That’s why I decided that way.” Big audience laughter.

Jay, going along—as if Arnold had spilled the beans during a momentary technical malfunction—shouts, “Right, good, right! I tell you I am shocked! I can’t believe it! I can’t believe it!”

Jay then starts out from the bottom again. “[Whether you’re going to run has been] in my monologue…it’s been good for, like, a thousand jokes over the last couple of weeks…”

Once more, he gently poses the question. “What are you going to do?” It’s still too early for an answer, and Jay knows it.

Arnold wants another false start. He’s planned it.

Well, my decision obviously is a very difficult decision to make, you know…it was the [most] difficult decision that I’ve made in my entire life, except the one in 1978 when I decided to get a bikini wax.”

Laughter, applause, whistles.

The studio audience warms to the fact that Arnold glimpses an absurdity about the whole proceeding.

He’s our Arnie, laughing the way we laugh. Hell, all we’ve got are laughs in this life, and our boy isn’t going to go stuffed shirt on us.”

An absolutely important confirmation.

Arnold then gives his rehearsed political speech.

He reflects that California was a grand land of opportunity when he arrived in 1968. It was the greatest state in the greatest nation.

However, now the atmosphere in California is “disastrous,” he says. There is a “disconnect” (thank you, pop psych 101) between the people and the politicians.

The politicians are fiddling, fumbling, and failing.” Very big applause follows. The audience is doing its job.

Close by, off camera, we hear Jay thumping his own personal hand claps. The host is pumping his studio crowd and giving his seal of approval to a remark whose veracity is supposed to be tested by the recall election itself.

And there is a phalanx of teen-age girls screaming at a very high pitch in the studio. They’re adding a major element of hysterical enthusiasm. Where did they come from? Are they a legitimate Arnold demographic? Were they pulled out of a Valley mall to paper the crowd? Do they migrate from talk show to talk show? From this point forward, they’ll play a huge role in every audience outburst.

Arnold gathers steam. He tells one and all that the people of California are doing their job.

They’re working hard.

Paying their taxes.

Raising their families.

But the politicians are not doing their job.

Now he executes a decent blend around the far turn: “And the man that is failing the people more than anyone is [Governor] Gray Davis!”

The crowd goes wild. The girls scream as if they’re at a kiddie rock concert in the magic presence of four sixteen-year-old pretty boys. It’s eerie.

And now the audience is suddenly on edge.

They can handle the juice. The longed-for result.

Arnold senses it.

He lets the audience-hysteria roller coaster die down and then, taking it up to heaven, announces that, he, Arnold is…

yes…

GOING TO RUN FOR GOVERNOR OF CALIFORNIA.

Boom. Bang. Pow. Zow.

The studio audience cracks the ceiling. Wilder than wild. The girls are shrieking walls of sound way above high C. Undoubtedly, the show is flashing applause signs.

Jay shakes his head and grins like a pro hypster who’s just witnessed a very, very good variation on bait and switch. As if Arnold was supposed to say no, but now he’s saying yes.

The Tonight Show band lays down some heavy chords.

Jay shouts, “There you go! There you go! That woke ‘em up! That woke ‘em up!” We cut to the press room, and sure enough, the reporters are now on phones, typing at their keyboards. The story is live and good to go. A global event is underway.

Amid the roar and the music, Jay, smiling broadly and wisely, shakes his finger at Arnold and says to him, “You know something?”

It seems Jay’s about to utter, “That’s the best damn switcheroo I ever saw!” But he doesn’t do it. Instead, as the noise abates, he says it’s a good time to go to a break.

The band plows into a funk riff, under the applause, and the show cuts to commercial.


The Matrix Revealed


The sea has parted. The consecration has been performed.

The ax felled the tree in the forest, and everyone heard it.

Marshall McLuhan rolled over in his grave, sat up, grinned, lit a cigar, and sipped a little brandy.

After the commercials, in the next six-minute segment, Jay and Arnold attain a few more highs of audience madness.

High one: Arnold mentions that 1.6 million Californians have signed the recall petition and are saying, “We are mad as hell and we are not going to take it anymore!” Wowee.

No one notices or remembers this line was made massively famous in Network, the bitter satire on news as entertainment.

Is it remotely possible Arnold recalls the 1976 Paddy Chayefsky film and its newsman, Howard Beale, who survives a ratings dive by delivering a delirious populist message on air, and becomes, for a short time, the most revered man in America?

Is it possible Arnold knows the TV network portrayed in the film gave its news division to its entertainment division—exactly what’s transpiring right there, for the moment, on The Tonight Show?

High two: Arnold clarifies his message to all politicians everywhere. “Do your job for the people and do it well, or otherwise you’re out. Hasta la vista, baby!” Zowee.

High three: After telling the crowd they all know Gray Davis can run a dirty campaign “better than anyone”—and that Davis has been selling off pieces of California to special interests—Arnold says with conviction and confidence, “I do not have to bow to any special interests; I have plenty of money; no one can pay me off; trust me, no one.” Audience hysteria. They love that he’s rich.

High four: Arnold says of Davis, “Everyone knows this man has to go!” Huge roar.

High five: Arnold plays a final pun card. “I will pump up Sacramento!” Yet another roar.

The band takes it out with more funk. Jay stands up and goes over and hugs Arnold, in profile, near his desk, and follows him closely toward an exit at stage left. Jay starts to whisper something in Arnold’s ear, but pulls back and smiles and, still on camera, applauds Arnold along with the audience.

It’s show biz in a bottle. Jay, Arnold, the crowd, the band, bouncing off one another and yielding the effect of absolute (synthetic) thrill.

The Tonight Show provided the moment for a globally famous actor to decide to run for office in the same state where the show originates. In the entertainment capitol of the world. In front of the clear prime-cut admiration of the host.

And the studio audience, that specialized creature from whose maw instant credibility can be coaxed and birthed in seconds—was very, very ready to go. All along.

Imagine an advance man pre-selling this kind of PR stunt:

I know a guy who can introduce your message to the softest, wildest, water-cooler crowd this side of paradise.”

Oh yeah? How big a crowd?”

Only a thousand or two. But they’re instantly hooked up to, say, ten million people in the target area. It’s as infectious as Ebola.”

Come on.”

And that’s not all. I’ve got a host for that softest, wildest audience, and he has the whole world in the palm of his hand. When he exposes your message—for the first time anywhere—and when his audience goes nuts with glee, nothing will stand in your way. Your opponents will go down like bowling pins.”

Too good to be true.”

Wrong. And let me point out what I’m saving you from, you most fortunate of all mothers. If you tried to launch your message at a shopping center or a press club or a hotel ballroom or construction site or on a movie-studio sound stage, you could get laughed right out of town. Really. Because, let’s face it, you do have a pretty vapid message when you boil it down. You need a unique venue, where the joke and the camp and the craziness are all folded into the event itself, and the shock and surprise and hoopla are integrated. You need an audience that celebrates bad and good jokes as all good, and the host has the ability to marry up every shred of this bizarre happening and take his crowd to orgasm. Talking multiple.”

And the contagion factor?”

The audience in the television studio and the viewing audience at home are One. My boy, what stuns and delights the former incorporates itself into the living cells of the latter. The home audience is terrified of being left out. The host and his in-studio crowd give instant universal legitimacy to the moment. Believe me, it’s irresistible.”

Like that McLuhan thing. The audience becomes the actor.”

Precisely.”

That is how it happened. That is how Arnold S obtained his billion-dollar ad on Jay Leno, on August 6, 2003, and that was when he won the recall election. There was no counter-strategy for it.

Gray Davis was left with his putz in his hand.

The announcement of Arnold’s candidacy was the end of the election.


Exit From the Matrix


In the aftermath, media pundits did not punch up this piece of mind control with any serious heat; nor did they immediately seek a heavy investigation of NBC’s ethics in allowing the Leno-Arnold event to take place.

The Tonight Show was a perfect killing ground: Arnold, the earnest and powerful and Germanically jolly and occasionally self-deprecating soul, aware of the comic-book component of his success; Jay, the jokester, who can work as a homer and straight man at the drop of a hat; and Jay’s audience, willingly propelled into the late-night nexus of “we’ll laugh so hard at any old damn thing we’ll make a cosmic celebration out of it.”

Something out of nothing.

GE (the owner of NBC): We bring good things to life.

An election campaign message was passed, hand to hand, mind to mind, adrenal gland to adrenal gland, from a concocted, groomed, cultivated, prepackaged television studio audience to every voter-district in California, and out to the whole world.

When people show up in the studio to see Leno in person, they soon understand the game. They’re not just there as happy onlookers. They’re drawn into the process. They’re offered a trade-off.

If they become active shills for the show right there in the studio, they’ll become part of the story. They’ll attain new status. Their laughs and squeals and shrieks and rebound guffaws, their revved-up salvational applause, at those moments when a guest segment or a joke is falling flat, will provide key segue and filler and affirmation and speed candy for the larger audience at home. It’s a group collaboration.

Who cares—except when a fading movie action hero trying to roll a seven on his latest film suddenly says he’s going to take over the reins of California?

In the television studio, and in millions of homes, the audience roared and helped Arnold go for his coronation. They experienced a reasonable facsimile of emotional torque and busted a move that showered sparks around Arnold’s head and pushed him through a porthole into an ozone that just might have been the closest thing they’d ever find to immortality.

On October 10, three days after Arnold scored number one in the recall vote count, The NY Times ran a piece by Bill Carter headlined, “NBC Supports the Politically Partisan Leno.”

It was merely about Jay, on the night of October 7, taking the stage in Los Angeles to introduce Arnold as the recall winner.

This was the issue? This was the barrier that Leno had crossed?

Jeff Zucker, head of entertainment at NBC, told Carter that he was aware Jay was going to introduce Arnold at the victory celebration. “I did not and do not have a problem with it,” he said.

Zucker noted that Jay was a private citizen with all the accruing rights of same.

Not a word about the propriety of Leno hosting Arnold’s campaign launch on August 6.

The Audience Party, on the night of August 6, 2003, fingered and chose and elected a governor of California.

Exit From the Matrix


What has been called The Matrix is a series of layers. These layers compose what we call Reality. Reality is not merely the consensus people accept in their daily lives. It is also a personal and individual conception of limits. It is a perception that these limits are somehow built into existence. But this is not true.

What I’ve done here is remove the lid on those perceived limits. This isn’t an intellectual undertaking. It’s a way to open up space and step on to a new road.

That road travels to more and more creative power, joy, and fulfillment.

During that great adventure, the individual experiences what has been labeled “paranormal” and “synchronistic” and “magical.” These words really don’t do us justice. They only hint at what we are and what we can do.

I put this collection together because it expresses, explains, and shows, in detail, how the individual can rediscover and reclaim his/her true power.

That process, that engagement, that life is beyond solving problems. Our problems, at the core, exist only because we have “misplaced an infinity.”

Everything I’ve done and written in the past 20 years has been aimed, one way or another, at bringing back that infinity, seeing through the layers of disguise, and moving ahead on the sunlit road we all desire.

We have, each one of us, an infinite life, lived in a world that is convinced it is bounded.

It’s time we dissolved that false contradiction.

The sandman: a short story

They invited me through the door into the room in the desert.

It was not a place I’d ever visited, and perhaps I’ll never know who they were.

But I was in the room, and there was a man sitting at a steel table. That’s all. The room was white and bare.

This man was looking at me and so I began to speak to him. I don’t remember what I said. I only remember I made every effort to get through.

At moments he seemed to grasp my words, but each time I felt he was on the brink, he looked away and lapsed into his doldrum, his place.

He was in a frozen universe. He was the final and ultimate distracted king of that place. It was all his.

I watched as a series of things happened then. An explosion tore away his castle and lit it on fire. A hand floated through the air and ripped the crown from his head. A tiger approached him and dispensed foul breath into his nostrils.

The man, the king, fell apart. He fell into pieces of plastic flesh that clattered on the floor.

The tiger walked into the wall and through it.

I understood this was my initial introduction to…life on Earth.

I had come from a long distance, and it was meant to inform me of some particular truth.

But what was it?

In those days, I was earnest. I had not yet set myself up in the Western desert as an entrepreneur peddling waking dreams.

In those days, I was looking for the single thing, the clue that would lead me to understand the resident species.

Gradually, in the months after my visit to the room, I began to fathom the lesson. By various means, the residents were turning into bereft creatures. They were involved in a process of emptying out their minds. They were dedicated to this goal, above all others.

They were devotees of the reflex. A thing happens; they respond.

It took me several further years to realize the content of the response made no difference at all.

Ten billion people could pick up a spoon; they could go to war; they could order ice cream.

They were driven to find a sequence in which all would participate.

This, they calculated, was a religion.

And they were arriving at their objective.

One by one, their leaders, who were sure they could remain above the fray, dropped off into the pit below. One by one, they lost their position and joined the rest of humanity.

And in this joining, there was great praise, as if the fall were proof of concept.


Exit From the Matrix


As a purveyor of dreams, I had a clear field for my operation.

I set up shop, and I sold them for a mere few dollars. I shaped these dreams—and this is the secret—so they would contain no endings.

They would wind off into murk and fog and cloud and vanishing point.

Living through such a dream would leave a trace in the psyche, a question, a doubt, a disaffection.

A thing to which no reflex would suffice.

It is how a world is born, or reborn.

The subsequent search demands ambition, desire, self-appointed thought, and imagination. From the depths of the swamp, these qualities surface.

My customers are not happy (as they previously defined happiness), but they move, and they learn to pay attention.

Some come to understand that the emergent qualities of the search ARE the goal, and having come back into their possession, they can live again.

They can, each of them, observe the collective reflex in its variations. And each of them can begin to create.

Create what?

New realities without end.

Non-reflexive; limitless.

Of course, I only peddle dreams. I don’t claim to do anything else. I am viewed as a kind of entertainer.

I have my little stand in the lobby of one of the great casinos of the soul, where gamblers lose everything they have, and stumble over to my counter on their way out to the desert.
