I’m reposting my 2011 piece because the mainstream press is now labeling accusations of pedophilia “a conservative strategy to attack Democrats.”
Really? Here we go:
ACCUSED PEDOPHILE’S CHILD CHARITY
NOVEMBER 12, 2011. Former Penn State football coach, pedophile Jerry Sandusky, started The Second Mile, a charity for at-risk children, in 1977. Sandusky is now accused of 40 criminal counts related to child sexual abuse. A witness states he saw Sandusky raping a young boy in the Penn State locker room, in 2002.
The Second Mile, on its site, claims it has helped 100,000 children in Pennsylvania. So far, Sandusky is the only accused pedophile.
To understand the reach of Second Mile and its prestige and influence in the state of Pennsylvania, and therefore to see how the current investigation could be narrowed or blocked, it’s instructive to note its supporters. Most of these names have now been removed from the charity’s site, but before that happened they were saved by at least several people. A poster at HawkeyeNation.com has put up many names. I found a few myself on Second Mile pages.
For example, Second Mile holds what it calls Challenge Residential Weeks. They are mini-camps for kids. They’re sponsored by Bank of America, The Hershey Corporation, Walmart, and Warnaco, whose leading brand is Calvin Klein.
Other companies show up peripherally, not directly, through individuals who work for them or did work for them and support or work for Second Mile:
* JPMorganChase
* PriceWaterhouse
* Heritage Hills Golf Resort
* Philadelphia Phillies
* Quaker State
* Highmark Blue Shield
* Susquehanna Bank
Then there are people who have held honorary status at Second Mile:
* Former Notre Dame football coach, Lou Holtz
* Philadelphia Eagles coach, And Reid
* Golf legend Arnold Palmer
* Actor Mark Wahlberg
* Matt Millen, former NFL player and current ESPN analyst (Millen was an unpaid “director” of an honorary board who possibly had duties at Second Mile)
* Fired Penn State football coach, Joe Paterno
* Baseball legend Cal Ripken
* Franco Harris, former Pittsburgh Steelers star
* Jack Ham, former Steelers star
* John Cappelletti, former NFL player
* Dick Vermeil, former NFL coach
I found four people who are Penn State employees:
* Professor Ralph Licastro
* Professor Bob Ricketts
* Susan Rao, who works in a science laboratory
* Jeff Smith
I’m in no way suggesting that any of these people are involved in the current Sandusky investigation or anything else untoward.
But it helps to understand the landscape. The very presence of these important names could result in someone, somewhere deciding it’s better to keep the Sandusky investigation on its single rail, and minimize efforts to find out what else, if anything, has been going on at Second Mile, or at Penn State.
Consider the furor that has been aroused by what has happened so far. The prospect, for law enforcement, for Penn State, for Second Mile, if another or other pedophiles exist is daunting, to say to the least. The repercussions could turn the tremors of an earthquake into a volcano.
In the years leading up to the arrest of accused child molester, Jerry Sandusky, there were not only clues, there were reports. The most stark report came from then-graduate assistant, Mike McQueary, who stated he saw Sandusky raping a young boy in the showers of the Penn State locker room, in 2002.
McQueary told his father, told Joe Paterno, the football coach, who then passed some version of what he was told to his boss—and so on and so forth, all the way up to the president of Penn State.
Where, apparently, nothing was done. The police certainly didn’t take action.
And then for nine years, Sandusky was free to come to Penn State and use the facilities, although he had already been retired from coaching (1999). He was sometimes in the company of children.
No one did anything.
McQueary rose to the position of assistant coach on the football team. He saw Sandusky, between 2002 and 2011, many times on campus. So did head coach Paterno. It is assumed that Paterno’s bosses also knew Sandusky had access to sports facilities at the college.
How to explain all this?
A psychological state of denial? Some sort of frozen indifference? Fear of spoiling the reputation of the college?
Although one or more of those reasons might be relevant, perhaps they’re too easy. Perhaps there is more to this than meets the eye.
Suppose these men were aware that the pedophile activity was far-reaching and involved other men? Suppose that was the real secret. And still is.
Yes, this is speculation. Certainly. But so is every other attempt to explain the apparent unconcern about Sandusky, who was on campus mere days before his arrest last week.
Suppose the prospect of, say, going to the police or the press about Sandusky meant the possibility of pulling back the curtain on other pedophiles, other boys, other connections—something so extensive it could never be lived down. Suppose, for example, other pedophiles were (and are) heavy hitters with more power and money and influence than a mere assistant football coach (Sandusky).
A similar paralysis infected Second Mile. Its attorney, Wendell Courtney, saw a 1998 police report indicating that Sandusky had showered with two boys. Although no charges were filed against Sandusky at the time, Second Mile could have removed him from all activities involving children. That is exactly what the charity did in 2008, when Sandusky informed the board that he was being investigated about yet another incident with a boy.
In 1998, the local police worked a sting on Sandusky. They listened to him him talking on the phone to the mother of one of the boys Sandusky showered with. During the call, Sandusky admitted what he did—but for reasons still not understood, the prosecuting attorney, Gricar, and Child Protective Services dropped the investigation. Why? (Gricar disappeared in 2005 and has never been seen again. He has been declared dead.)
To this point, we have heard nothing about photos or videos Sandusky may have possessed. Certainly, the police have searched his home and office. What did they find?
So far, when the press comments on the intransigence of Penn State and Second Mile officials, the statements are expressions of shock and moral outrage and puzzlement. It’s time to move past that and consider that there may be real explanations here.
Second Mile may be forced to close its doors. Moody’s has indicated that the bond rating of Penn State could suffer from this scandal. All because of the activity of one accused pedophile. Imagine what would happen, in this regard, if there are other pedophiles who are part of Sandusky’s operation.
More reasons to try to limit the investigation to Sandusky.
—end of 2011 article—
Does that pedophile case sound like nothing more than “a conservative strategy to attack Democrats?”
Wikipedia: “In 2011, following a two-year grand jury investigation, Sandusky was arrested and charged with 52 counts of sexual abuse of young boys over a 15-year period from 1994 to 2009. He met his molestation victims through The Second Mile [the charity he founded]; they [the children] were participating in the organization. Several of them testified against Sandusky in his sexual abuse trial. Four of the charges were subsequently dropped. On June 22, 2012, Sandusky was found guilty on 45 of the 48 remaining charges. Sandusky was sentenced on October 9, 2012, to 30 to 60 years in prison.”

Is the Jeff Smith the same Jeff Smith (The Frugal Gourmet) who was accused of molesting teenage boys?

The true story of the scandal revolves around then AG Tom Corbett who was in charge of charity oversite for PA. He was gearing up for a run for governor (which he won) and received most of his $ from TSM [The Second Mile] charity. He was the one who had Paterno fired. He was also in bed with the board and a guy named Ira Lubert who was and is PSUs [Penn State university] top donor!
PSU and Sandusky take the fall and save Corbett and TSM. All with the help of good ole Louis Freeh who was the hired hand by board member Merck CEO Ken Frazier. Like any good scandal, we got to have a big pharma connection in here don’t we.
Corbett needed TSM so any investigation into them would destroy his chance of becoming governor. The death of Gricar was intriguing to say the least and PA child services is down right horrible!
I followed a blogger by the name of Ray Belhar who detailed every aspect of this case to include FOIA items. His reports can still be found on the internet.
Thank you for your excellent articles.

Remember back a few years ago when the “P” in LGBTQPIA stood for PEDOPHILIA? They shouted it loud and shouted it proud then: P = Pedophilia. Couldn’t miss it.
Now it’s absent. P no longer stands for PEDOPHILIA, they revised it to stand for PANSEXUALISM. It probably INCLUDES pedophilia in its overweening INCLUSIVITY, but it’s just not quite so out of the closet blatant. Taking place right under our noses but deny, deny deny and blame it on being just a conspiracy theory fantasy of “conservatives”. It’s more a conspiracy of silence amongst the culprits trying to cover their sin.
Pastor Voddie Baucham was doing a message on LGBTQIA2S+, deliberately leaving out the P. Probably hits too close to home. Wouldn’t want to upset the heavy hitters in his congregation
“…the pedophile at Penn State…”
This situation is an example of many things… including the complete uselessness of State mass media.
For decades, the big ‘respected’ coach at Pedo St… er… Penn State was thought to be the pinnacle of virtue and leading an exemplary program. An example for the World.
In truth, he was looking the other way (at the very least) while horrendous behavior was going on inside his oh-so-perfect football program for decades.
And State mass media was touting him as that pinnacle of virtue for all those decades.
Did State mass media ever really examine what was going on all those years? Did They settle for the thin surface appearance of a clean program and not see the rot and stench that was just below the surface? Were they told NOT to look very deeply? Did They see the stench and deliberately hide it?
In many sports programs around America… winning is all that matters. All forms of deviant behavior can be ignored or covered up so long as the program keeps winning and attracting top recruits (and lots of money). And in the college game… all those big contributions keep the big dollars coming into the school bank account. And people like giving money to winners instead of ‘losers’.
Pedo St… er… Penn State will forever be tarnished by the behavior of so many who were in top responsible positions and what they did… or did not… do.
America and the World suffers from a terrible disease called Win At All Costs aka Do Whatever It Takes Even Outside The Rules of Decency.
And of course… when someone ‘wins’ by doing anything and everything inside and outside the lines to do so… They have in truth ‘won’ a thing. Except the Collar of Shame.
There is terrible rot in many if not most institutions in this County and the World. Why? Because there is a spiritual rot widely amongst the people of the World. And people carry that rot with them in all the various aspects of life.
Our World was never perfect. But it has also never been Effed Up as deeply as it is now.
But the stands again this coming football season at Pedo St… er… Penn State… will be filled again with cheering fans of smiling faces and eyes wide shut.
And cheering all the while with the lives of real people have been ruined as they seek answers and the pain to stop while being hidden away from the bright lights of State mass media.
In the days of Lot – Genesis 14 & 19; Luke’s gospel.
Surely so, Marlene, and more.
And, thank you, Jon, for bringing this back to light!
Penn State is located in the diocese of Altoona,where a major pedophile scandal occured. When I lived there in the late 1990s the priests in State College were gay,
You Tube, “Send Us Thine Asteroid O Lord”, by Joseph Murray. See it, because that’s what we deserve, the sweet meteor of death, for tolerating men who diddle the babies, the toddlers, the young boys, the teens. Hell will not be hot enough for anyone who corrupts a child.
God promises the millstone around the neck. Good.
Never let these “minor attracted people” make headway with their disgusting, vile perversion. This is the hill to die on.
Single mothers, absent fathers, grandparents doing the job their kid should have done (raise their children) and guardians, never let your boy be alone with an unrelated male. Realize a boy without a father is catnip to these predators. When men walk away from their kids, they leave them vulnerable to pedophiles, who capitalize on a lonely boy who needs a man’s attention and approval. No man can replace a good father. Once corrupted, it cannot be undone. That damage is permanent.
Pay close attention to any man who takes an interest in your boy. Never let him spend time alone with him. Watch out for gifts of all kinds, money, video games, toys, etc. Monitor your child’s behavior. Does he suddenly not like someone or want to be alone with them? Any change in behavior needs to be noted. Is the child uncharacteristically sad, depressed, anxious? Are there nightmares, or the child does not want to sleep alone? Changes in attitude toward school? Loss of interest in sports or activities? Sudden sexual comments or preoccupation? Inappropriate behavior? Pay attention. Talk to your child, have that conversation, that their body is THEIRS and nobody has a right to touch them or ask them to do weird things, and that if that happens they are to tell you immediately. Very importantly, believe your child. Never say never, do not discount even best friends, cherished relatives, close neighbors. Children that have been harmed need competent counseling, to try to mitigate the harm. Stay calm. Going nuts may help you, but not them. Let them know none of it was their fault.
The Epstein scandal is also a glimpse into this dark world, as was the story of hundreds of thousands of children abused in France and elsewhere by people of the frock… There is a weird ring of power, The Netherlands was once trying to fight, along Belgium, UK, USA – the gymnastics team scandal – without much success. Thailand is still a destination for such a dark tourism. It hurts badly. Protect your children. Prevent, like Evangeline said.
And let’s not forget the Jimmy Saville scandal. The BBC knew for years what he was up to, and yet because behind his cloak of rotten-to-the-core human, he did so much for charity, to hide his vile behaviour , they closed their eyes, until he died.. And outside the BBC building we still have a monument to paedophilia. It is rife the world over.
