Anti-logic: the education plague

In all times and places, logic is never taught to the masses. There is no intention to do so.
Now, in our “egalitarian society,” education carries with it great PR pretension, a fakery that outflanks any other period in history.
Therefore, graduating students wrongly believe they know how to think.
In my latest collection, Power Outside The Matrix, I include a long audio tutorial, Analyzing Information in the Age of Disinformation, which is all about carrying out deep investigations of major official scenarios/stories, and discovering how and where these official structures can be penetrated, taken apart, and unfolded, so all their flaws and deceptions are exposed.
This training is meant to remedy the deep hole people find themselves in, when they go up against entrenched (or even alternative) “knowledge.”
For example, there is a particular logical fallacy I call: “this means that.”
It runs rampant throughout society. The fallacy bleeds into the reasoning process, into notions of self-worth, into people’s need to identify themselves with an “acceptable” position.
Take the concept of manmade global warming. For many people, affirming this as a reality means:
“I’m defending the sacred quality of life on Earth, I’m helping the planet, I’m exposing the nasty crimes of big corporations, I’m acknowledging and shining a spotlight on the selfish and petty actions of the masses, I’m in the vanguard of recognizing that this issue represents the greatest threat humankind has ever known, I’m transcending ‘profits over values’, I’m envisioning with others a better world, I’m aligning myself with the best international scientific minds, I’m experiencing the sensation of having a larger mission in life.”
This—manmade global warming—means all that.
Therefore, how do you approach rational discourse on the subject of manmade warming?
You don’t.
There is no logic to be found. There is only “this means that.”
The concept or idea or symbol of manmade warming is so fully packed with sentiment, it resists all attempts at entry.
Here is another example: “America must field a powerful military force all over the world.”
For many people this means: “US wars are good and righteous wars, support our troops, admire the representations of war in sports, praise large American corporations, vote for a ‘tough President’, winning is everything, expand the Pentagon budget, develop a kick-ass attitude, love technology in all forms and degrees, obey and agree with institutional authority, assume that bigger is always better.”
“This means that.”
Therefore, a rational discussion about the wisdom of deploying the US military all over the planet is impossible. The amount of packed sentiment is a suit of body and mind armor.
In the case of manmade warming, examining the science behind the hypothesis becomes completely irrelevant. To even begin to look at it feels like an act of betrayal to the person who has “this means that” firmly in place.
Nothing in the person’s education has ever challenged his reflexive hard-wired “this-that” formulation. A breakthrough has never been made in the area of logic.
Instead, education has, at best, skated across the surface of “this means that” and left it undisturbed.
With some degree of accuracy, one could say that all the other traditional logical fallacies—ad hominem attack, straw man, vague generality, circular reasoning, appeal to authority, etc.—spring from “this means that.”
When I attended college in the 1950s, it was my good fortune to have a logic professor who could analyze and separate a thousand angels dancing on the head of a pin—and at the same time, maintain his great and natural charm and sense of humor.
Our conversations outside of class were moments of excitement. They were also rugged mind workouts.
His parting shot to me, as I was about to graduate: “Know what you don’t know.”
Some 20 years later, when I began a career as a reporter, that piece of advice came back to me.
I was prepared to do investigations, because I could make assessments of what I didn’t know and therefore needed to find out.
I could evaluate sources, who would often try to deploy logical flaws to derail me.
One of the great delights of reporting is discovering that the story you’re working on isn’t the story. The story turns out to be something else entirely.
That was the case in 1987, when I got down to writing my first book, AIDS Inc (note: AIDS Inc is included as bonus in Power Outside The Matrix). People were coming at me from every direction, feeding me their half-baked theories about what AIDS “really was.”
They seemed to believe that, because they were departing from the conventional wisdom on the subject, they must be right.
Encountering that odd notion of self-entitlement stood me in good stead, from that time forward.
When I eventually arrived at the bottom of the AIDS story, I was shocked to see it wasn’t at all what I predicted it would be.
It’s astounding how many logical steps people are willing to skip over, when they have a “this means that” cooking in their heads.
Like a foreign traveler visiting a bizarre museum, I’ve encountered many varieties of sophistry over the past 30 years.
Logic isn’t the be-all and end-all. But it is, in the largest sense, an ever-expanding method you can use to probe deeper and deeper into an argument, a line of reasoning, and engage with the basic assumptions that underlie a position a person is occupying.
It’s as if you’re learning a story backwards, moving toward the beginning, where all the secrets are.
And chances are good that you will eventually encounter some form of the abiding “this means that,” hiding like a horned toad under a bush.
He’s there, he’s quiet, he’s waiting, and when you turn a branch away from a shadow, he stares at you and you know you’ve arrived at the nexus:
the unyielding stubborn source of confusion and illogic.
And sometimes, on good days, you can get the horned toad to tell his story. His real story. All the way through. And you can see him regain his lost sanity.
That’s an experience not to be missed. You’ll remember it for your whole life.

I have to admit that I’m confused over the whole global warming argument….by all the attention paid to the arguments presented from both sides. I try not to pay attention to any “positions”, either that its real or that it isn’t (nor to the why’s, the how’s and whatever evidence is presented since “evidence” can be made to point to any conclusions its sponsors desire) and it seems almost as if focusing on “global warming”…the effects….rather than examining actions and beliefs in a world that is all about consumption is the wrong way to look at what does feel instinctively to be a real and present phenomenon. If you think about it….and yes, I do think…..many resources really ARE finite. Breathable air really DOES come from coral reefs, rainforests, trees, and vegetation, etc. Bees and pollenating insects really DO perpetuate the growth of edible food. The absence of these things, if they are all used up, WILL have actual consequences. To deny that this is so is to live in a state of cognitive dissonance similar to denying that a sedentary lifestyle from cradle to grave (which doesn’t include my parents and grandparents generations who at least started out in a world that wasn’t contaminated by heavy metals and toxic chemicals and fake food) eating nothing but candy and processed foods and smoking WILL cut short quality of life and good health. Its a matter of accepting that all choices and actions do have consequences. John,I love ya and don’t take this the wrong way, but it seems to me that the statement “global warning is a myth” is missing the big picture, and falling victim to the very talking points and propaganda that you call out on a daily basis.
-I typically agree with you on virtually every position you take….however this is one particular thing that makes me scratch my head because everything doesn’t add up either way. I believe in consequences and just can’t make myself to insist that they only come to fruition some of the time. Regardless of whether the weather is changing and why….the plants that fill up every room of my house do indeed filter and clean my air……and the physical effects on my pets and animals is real. If I eat fast food every meal for a couple of days, I can feel the physical effects of this behavior in a sluggish, tired, achy, yucky feeling of lingering malaise. Clarity through contrast; there are real and undeniable consequences. How can it be denied that industry pumping heavy metals and toxic waste into the air, that trucks dumping millions of pounds of non-biodegradable trash into landfills, that companies systematically eradicating mile after mile after mile of rainforests every year, that pesticide and other chemicals spreading across all corners of the globe poisoning bees and bugs will have actual environmental consequences that will trickle their way down to human and animal life? These are real behaviors. The Earth is as big as it is, and will get no bigger. Real estate is finite. It seems to me that somehow….somehow….these things are all connected and these arguments are off merely a diversion from a true problem.
Kay, maybe you don’t realize it, but your concluding sentence is an admission of “this means that” thinking. “Somehow, these things are all connected.” Making connections, “somehow” (who knows how … not by logic or using actual untampered data) the rising CO2 levels seem just as detrimental to living creatures as any kind of poison that we unleash.To continue to say, “There seems to be a connection” when real evidence shows that is not the case is to indulge in “this means that” thinking. By your own admission, you do not look at evidence, but rely on your own mysterious connections. You need to start asking yourself how those connections came to be, if not through logic or evidence. The answer is probably the same for most people – repeated news stories, seriously intoned or written, accompanied by stock imagery of smokestacks and environmental damage. Those connections are placed in your brain by other people. You say you mistrust anyone’s evidence – how much more should you mistrust their propaganda?
Yes Greg, whenever you hear everyone knows type rhetoric, that is your first clue that it is a lie. global warming is a talismanic phrase (Michael Tsarion talks about this in detail) Just like obama and his hope and change rhetoric, its brainwashing.

In today’s world courage is lacking in mankind. The courage to seek truth is dying fast. It has been replaced by an alternate reality which is nourished by moral relativism, the new plague. We never reach a point of consonance anymore, instead we are lost in cognitive dissonance, a black hole. The vast majority of the population no longer subscribes to logic. Too many generations have been lost and brainwashed, today most of the people have kind of undergone a de-evolutionary process which has taken away from all of them the basic instinct for survival and the courage to think. Most of these people inhabiting this country today are like lost sheep unknowingly wandering closer to their slaughter. Not only do these people endanger their own lives but many other people as well.
The new world order finally figured out how to destroy vast population centers on this earth without war. Form a society which loathes itself and humanity in general. Create a cult known as man made global warming and tell them the earth is going to perish, the only antidote is for man to eventually self-destruct. They also needed to create massive guilt within the human psyche, tell people everything from the past was wrong, racist and evil. The only answer is to change and reject the past in its entirety. We as a human race need to start over, be enlightened, come willingly into the hive. Do not question world government, it is the answer to all our troubles. Throw any kind of logic and reason out the door, reject any view contrary to globalism.
We now live in an age where all the “science” has been “settled,” do not question what you are being spoon fed. Dare not question big brother, become part of the hive (google, facebook, twitter: surveillance state). Become obsessed with a pop culture of death which never encourages anything other than group “thought” and self-destruction. Feel safe within the hive. If anything upsets the alternate universe, the state will provide all those in need with puppies to pet, crayons to color with and arts and crafts to amuse them. “Safe Zones” will be provided by “progressive” people who are “warriors” for social “justice” and the “betterment” of mankind, it is after all the “correct” way, the “politically correct” way to go about life. Accept a life of existence rather than living. Oh and how can we forget Hillary Clinton’s great idea for adults, “fun” camps, I am sure that would have solved all our problems.
You know Jon, I wish you would do an article about how the globalists and the extreme left have hijacked the language. After all, today there really is nothing progressive about people who call themselves progressive. Nothing safe about safe zones. Nothing particularly warrior like in a SJW, and no real truth in political correctness. Entitlements are now “given” to people who are not entitled to anything. Redistribution of wealth today has become a phrase being used to create a super elite class and a destitute lower class with nothing in between. Logical thinking people can see through all of this. The big problem is time is running out, the people with the courage to think are becoming obsolete.
Thank you for that quote from Aristotle. Courage and honor are vital to the health of the individual and our republic. The human species can not survive without these. A wrinkle in time warned us about this potential reality of zombies. I remember reading this as a child and realizing how important this was. It didnt seem like anyone else got it though. No need to ask anymore how a zombie world came into being, its all happening right in front of us. Now we need to be asking what else is possible, and how does it get better than this.

What a sad, sad state of affairs for the entire scientific community.
I can never understand such articles and arguments. Are we arguing semantics or whats visibly acknowledged with my eyes? I’ve lived in my city all my life for 35 years and the change I see in the weather pattern is massive. F*** all the statistics and stuff. What I see are summers that are extremely hot and tropical monsoons (which used to be a “good smattering”) a huge deluge for a week at a time or more. So much so that the city comes to a standstill for a month after.

as you know there are many people who
say that the un/gobalists who created the globalwarming/climatechange fear are the very ones who are causing it. that is how i see it too. another example of problem/reaction/solution.
There seems to be real evidence that the earth has been around for billions of years and has gone through ice ages, periods of both extreme warming/cooling, floods and other larger natural calamities. All this seemed to occur when there was virtually no industrialization or machines around, a lot of these massive earth/climate changes occurred when man didn’t exist. Hurricanes, tornadoes, volcanos, tseunamis have happened on earth throughout the centuries.
I look out my window and come to grips with the reality of my lifetime on earth realizing my lifetime on this planet is just a like a mere grain of sand on a beach when I compare it to the earth’s long existence. Having said this I am going to put my faith in only a select group of propagandists and certain scientists who cook computer models to promulgate a leftist political agenda which destroys individual freedom, the US economy and its middle class? I am going to listen to fairytales by liberals who ignore real ecological problems like the death of a big part of the pacific ocean due to the Fukushima disaster? I am going to listen to politicians whose regulations close one coal mine in the US while simultaneously overseeing the opening of three other coal mines in other parts of the world?
Am I going to listen to a bunch of lunatics who play with words? First calling this “problem” global warming, then climate change because it now suits cooling, warming or any change in the weather. What are the facts, is every hurricane, earthquake or change in temperature caused by man’s actions on earth? Or do facts tell us the sun is the primary factor regarding the earth’s weather? Is the science now settled because Al Gore, Barack Obama and some scientists tell us the earth is in peril? Are we to round up and put in jail all those scientists who disagree with the climate alarmists ? Are we to ban books in schools who present opposite viewpoints to these liberal fanatics? The citizens they call climate change deniers should be silenced and maybe put in jail ? Good God, can you not see what a crazy cult this has become.
The earth is resilient. The earth is always adapting and manages to repair itself every time. The eruption of Mt. St. Helens left a 150 square miles of basically ashes. Thirty seven years later, a land surface once thought of as sterile is flourishing with forests.
Today we are under constant assault by people who believe the earth is doomed. Biblioclasm, Portland Oregon school board bans school books disagreeing with man-made climate change. This is fascism at it’s worst. The school board has taken the stance that the “science” of man made global warming is settled. Real science is never settled, it is open to debate. Theories are created and get debated by real scientists constantly. Extremist liberals claim they have an open mind. But when it comes to an open mind and debate, they ban books. They ostracize any type of speech or thinking contrary to their leftist propaganda. Welcome to America 2016, land of the sheeple where censorship is now in vogue. Climate “justice,” is the liberals recent new sick play on words.
Put your faith in planet earth and its ability to adapt throughout time. Stop believing in the extreme liberal self fulfilling prophecy which emphasizes the inevitable extinction of humanity. We need to put our personal liberty above all things. Without these liberties we cease to live but rather just exist. Without liberty and individual freedoms we are nothing more than slaves.
When human beings seek to become God and no longer believe our unalienable rights come from our creator, they become arrogant and narcissistic. A country or world which rejects God and shuns God, will eventually self-destruct.
Human beings who go out in the world seeking and wanting perfection but never taking the time to stop and look up at the sky and see the perfection right before their eyes will never get it. These robot like “people” never take the time to take a deep breath and count their blessings. It is a non stop thirst for power and control. These type of people who claim they are doing things for the “betterment” of humanity want to create alternate realities. In their warped minds their delusions will always trump facts and truth. They fail to see the perfection in imperfection. The end will always justify their devious deeds and nefarious plans for society.
Human beings with flaws, physical maladies and mental incapacities are seen as defective to these megalomaniacs. Imperfect creations which need to be wiped out totally in future generations. They see no purpose to God’s creation. Other people who have caring hearts and endearing souls see something different. These people see the love God creates in everything. We see the perfection in imperfection.
These globalist types have no use for the individual and his/her individual
freedom. It is merely a nuisance to them. They know what is best, that “best” always boils down to their accumulation of power and full control of the masses. Acquiescence by us, the masses to our so-called “superiors,” the globalists must be achieved. The day we throw our US Constitution out the window and the day we start paying lip service to God is the day this country begins to go down a road we can never return from.
It is already happening, we have a huge part of the population perfectly okay with ripping out of the womb an innocent baby and killing this child at nine months of a pregnancy. We have a huge part of the world who believes in euthanasia. A large adult population which now looks upon their elderly parents as nothing more than an inconvenience or a nuisance. Everything about the world “created” by the globalists and not God involves the destruction and or mocking of the human soul. To the globalists the soul is something to be laughed at and made fun of. Yes, humanity is nothing but a machine to be experimented upon by a bunch of high tech elitist “intellectuals” who claim to be our superiors, the watchers of this world. The great scientists, bankers, lawyers, politicians, social engineers, eugenicists who create the illusion they are promoting the greater “good” of society.
The pee-ons and common man who have no time in their lives other than to work and serve their “superiors.” We all should just accept the fact that these other “people” have superior minds and know better. The cattle rancher, the farmer, the teacher, the policeman, the coal miner, the cook, the waitress, the janitor are just here to serve their “superiors.” The globalists and great “thinkers” will now tell us all how to live, how to think and what to expect. When the pee-ons usefulness is no longer required, the pee-ones will be phased out of the human race. These pee-ons have no say. The bloodlines of these globalists are superior, they know best, the watchers who want to create heaven on earth. The same superiors and watchers who have never spilled an ounce of blood for the freedom they enjoy and claim they alone are entitled to.
Humanity is at the greatest crossroad in its existence. We either take a stand for individual freedom or we go willingly to our slaughter. We either strike a balance between common sense, virtue, liberty, technology and science. Or we accept the fascist globalist dogma that humanity will eventually become obsolete. Accept the globalists great plan for human enslavement and eventual destruction, except for them of course and a paltry few slaves kept around to maintain the machinery. It is up to all of us to start living again or relegate ourselves to eventually becoming obsolete. Living means taking a stand against evil.

Corporations own and run climate science. Monsanto owns Beelogic Corp, The Climate Corporation. How can clear and fact filled climate knowledge come from that. Or bee knowledge come from that kind of corrupt ownership….
There is a fail-safe carbon sink on this planet it is called vegetation, the more that is available, the more the plants will take in, and that includes phytoplankton algae. Anyone who runs a greenhouse or has grows plants and flowers has known this…for ages. CO2 has become a toxic gas when in fact we as humans need it for life, as do other mammals. Did ya know that you need it? An it is vital in all plant growth. present day earth IS one of the lower period of CO2 in an atmosphere. Ice cores sampled point to a past earth that had times were 1000-1500 ppm of CO2 were present in the atmosphere; and mammals were thriving then!
Did you know that the greatest green house gas on planet earth is water vapour…clouds.? Maybe we should ban them…yes lets ban clouds, damn things heating up and blocking the sunlight.
Here in Saskatchewan where I live, October has shown six hours of unimpeded sunlight…that a drastic drop. Since Saskatchewan was once considered the land of living skies. And the drop in sunlight? Excessive and incessant chem-trailing. Sometimes so obvious, as for one to see three or four planes at a time spraying their nucleation poison, their haze making concoction of Barium, Strontium, Titanium white or nano particulate of aluminum, did you know that nano aluminum has a inra red refractory rate greater than CO2?
Did you know that concrete is actually a carbon sink, it absorbs twice as much than what is used to create it a few years after it sets; and CO2 is dropping naturally because of agriculture?
Did you know that there has not been NO change in antarctic ice cover in the last 100 years? That a fact.
Did you know George Soros is producing CO2 from coal, and gains a huge boon from government on Carbon capture, and then pumps it back down old oil wells to re-pressurize them to reclaim more oil, gaining another fortune. Did you know he is responsible for a lot of this climate scare?
Did you know there has been no global temperature change in 17 years? Why the pause?
Did you know you are being taxed for breathing out?
Did you know there is a purposeful melting of the arctic ice cover?
Did you know that the sun is the driver of climate, not humans.?

The world is very complicated. We are told that if we focus on one area, we might become an expert and, perhaps, add to the body of knowledge in that area. We might actually earn a living from our expertise in that area. This means that all of the other areas we must accept the experts in those areas to do the thinking. So, you might focus on plumbing or computers, or suing people but you cannot do all three.
In each area, there is a hierarchy of expertise. If you can repeat what the experts say, you might move higher in the hierarchy. If you don’t, you might lose any status that you may have achieved. Once you have invested years in one area, you don’t want to jeopardize your position by challenging those higher in the hierarchy. You have an interest in keeping quiet. Keeping quiet is more difficult than not knowing anything that you would have to keep quiet about. So, when the experts in your area says that this means that, you parrot it without thinking. You reason that all these experts must be right. This means that is a fact that you are not smart enough to think about.
In this way, the hierarchy of experts manufacture our reality. But the experts don’t work for us. The experts at the top of the structure work for control freaks that are farming us. They milk us and shear us, and make us pull the cart. When we cannot perform for them, they harvest us by giving us a disease that will cause us to give them all the money we earned over a lifetime to get a little more life.
These ideas are so disturbing, most people would rather live in an artificial world where they are no worse than anybody else. They don’t knowledge their mistake until they are in the slaughter house.

While I’m sure it would make for a bad argument to use strictly emotional, egotistical arguments to back climate change, we can thank our lucky stars that’s not why climate change is accepted as a fact. 😉
It is weird you would make a whole article about global warming being false, complain about how liberals use “strawman arguments”, and then proceed to only back up your statement about climate change with personal attacks on liberals. You don’t pull up any evidence that empirically disputes climate change, you don’t pull up a study and show why it’s false, you don’t really say anything to dispute the given facts. You’re making this accusation that global warming is fake and that the reason people believe in it is because they’re illogical, but in turn make your whole argument about something that doesn’t remotely relate to refuting any of the given evidence. You’re ironically backing your “logical” reasoning with one long, drawn out logical fallacy.
