Dr. Bronner replies to Rappoport article on GMO labeling strategy

The sub-title of this article is borrowed from a sentence a friend wrote to me:
Let’s vote to label something that is destroying the biology of the Earth.
Under a tweet with the title of my recent article, “Criticize the moneyman who support GMO labeling: you get Silence,” there is a tweet from Dr. Bronner, who I presume is David Bronner.
He has been a major funder of the Prop 37 and Prop 522 labeling campaigns in CA and WA. He is pro-labeling.
The Bronner reply tweet reads: “We’ve been very careful to listen to local campaigners on campaign tactics.”
Based on limited information, I would question that. But my article was really about something else. It was about the overall message these campaigns have pushed at voters: “You have a right to know what’s in your food.”
It’s been the single message in ads, from start to (losing) finish for both Prop 522 and 37.
It has drowned out all other messages from the pro-labeling camp.
And it’s a disaster. Big-time.
You have a right to know because…? The campaigns don’t answer that question for voters. They don’t put that answer out in flaming letters and spoken words and images.
One might think the reason for the gross omission has something to do with treating voters gently “on the level at which they can perceive the issue.”
But behind that unworkable strategy, there is fear. Fear of going up against Monsanto and Dow and Syngenta and other food-tech giants who are responsible for inserting genes in food crops and drenching growing fields with toxic chemicals.
These giants don’t need big shields to ward off blows in the labeling campaigns, because no blows are coming at them. They only have to deflect the droning “you have a right to know.”
Ultimately, the question isn’t about winning or losing the labeling initiatives on ballots. It’s about waking people up to the corporations who are monopolizing and poisoning the food supply.
In other words, Monsanto wins in the long run, unless the public outcry is so great it becomes an unstoppable wave.
And in that crucial regard, “you have a right to know” doesn’t cut it. It doesn’t come close.
As I’ve written before, American consumers will not buy so much non-GMO food it pushes Monsanto to the wall. Unless…the truth about Monsanto’s crimes becomes a sword.
Why is it so hard to understand this?
Because so many people want things to be easy and clean and nice and neat.
Wanting it, however, does not make it so.
On the level at which these labeling initiatives are carried out, the mythic theme is: we can build a better model (while leaving the criminal in place to decay away to dust). Then we sweep up the ashes and go on our merry way.
Would that it were so.
This is, however, a piece of mind control. It saturates the minds of people who “just want things to be fair” and “fairly decided.”
Even those who admit the voters “need to be educated about the harm GMOs and herbicides do” aren’t on the right track. They’re too soft. This isn’t a classroom in which the teacher draws diagrams on the blackboard.
This isn’t merely an adult education class.
This is showing people, up close, in their faces, what chemical warfare is like, when the agent is Monsanto’s Roundup. Evil. This is farmers, actual humans, coerced by Monsanto and driven to the wall. Evil. This is the death of small farming. Evil. This is big fat superweeds taking over farm land, so farmers have to spray even more dangerous chemicals like Paraquat on their fields. Evil. This is Monsanto buying up seed companies and taking over the food supply. Evil. This is Monsanto liars lying to the public about food safety. Evil. This is the US government, the FDA, the USDA, the White House, the President(s) running the game exactly as Monsanto wants them to. Evil. This is shooting untested and unpredictable genes into food. This is making people sick. This is punishing scientists who expose Monsanto. Evil.
All this is the substance of a real political campaign, which has the actual goal of putting Monsanto on the run as the towering wave overtakes them.
And that is the goal, because that is the only way to stop GMO food and horrific chemicals.
Consumer choice as the answer is like Rule by the Proletariat as an answer. In the Marxian fairy tale, the State eventually withers away, magically, and utopia is what’s left. In the consumer choice model, enough food buyers choose non-GMO and Monsanto withers away.
Believing this is a preposterous article of faith.
Monsanto is quite happy to go into the ring and contest that faith with its own propaganda machine, for the next 50 years.
Again, why is this so hard to understand?
Because in a core waking trance, the leaders and money men, with their allies and field workers, in the campaign to label GMOs, are soothing themselves with a fantasy about what works in the arena of politics.
They like their fantasy. They want to hold on to it. They are comforted by it. It sings a song to them. So it must be true.
But it isn’t.
Winning labeling campaigns, losing them, it’s all the same…the battle is lost, unless we name the evil and attack it and reveal it for all to see and keep on attacking it.
If you lived in a neighborhood where one family dumped corrosive clouds of poison on their lawn every few days, would you tell your other neighbors to choose organic lemon juice to kill weeds and leave it at that?
Would you smile and wipe your hands of the whole problem and go on your way, believing the issue would resolve itself?
Would you say, “Soon, no stores will sell that corrosive poison because so many people are buying lemons”?
That’s my reply to David Bronner and the other major money men who fund GMO labeling. I would be interested in reading their full responses.
As always, I hope they actually read what I write and reply to it, rather than to some straw man.
For example, if they write, “Well, we almost won in WA and CA with our strategy”, then they haven’t read me; nor have they read the tea leaves correctly.

Dr. E.H. Bronner, chemist, patriot, distant relative of Albert Einstein and maker of pure castile soap, was a conspiracy theorist. In other words, he told the truth. From an early age he made the effort to sort through the disinformation and was not afraid of the propagandists labeling him a kook.
Dr Bronner was born in Germany to a Jewish father and emigrated to the United States in 1929. He warned his parents about the evils of the rising Nazi Party, but they ignored his pleas to come to the U.S. while they could. The last contact he had with his parents, who died in a Nazi camp, was in the form of a censored postcard saying, “You were right. —Your loving father.”
In a letter printed in The Catholic Mirror, Springfield, MA, January 1952, Dr Bronner seemingly warned the people of Massachusetts about the dangers of water fluoridation. As I read it, he warned them about the Nazis.
“It appears that the citizens of Massachusetts are among the ‘next’ on the agenda of the water poisoners.
There is a sinister network of subversive agents, Godless ‘intellectual’ parasites, working in our country today whose ramifications grow more extensive, more successful and more alarming each new year and whose true objective is to demoralize, paralyze and destroy our great Republic–from within if they can, according to their plan–for their own possession.
The tragic success they have already attained in their long siege to destroy the moral fiber of American life is now one of their most potent footholds towards their own ultimate victory over us.
Fluoridation of our community water systems can well become their most subtle weapon for our sure physical and mental deterioration.
As a research chemist of established standing, I built within the past 22 years, 3 American chemical plants and licensed 6 of my 53 patents. What is not mentioned in the letter is the documented fact that sodium fluoride was used in the concentration camps to keep the prisoners docile and submissive, rendering them unwilling to fight back against those that would kill them. Many people ask why Germans surrendered control to the Nazis, how they couldn’t see such obvious oppression. Upon observing the average modern American I ask: “What was in Germany’s public water supply?”

I thank you extensively for this post about Dr. Bronner. I use his pure castile peppermint soap and I’ve even read the label. So I’ve thought for four decades that Dr. Bronner was surely a kook, but I had no idea he was actually a kook like me. This was most enlightening.
As is often the case, I suspect his heirs do not share the good doctor’s obvious concern for the welfare of the people. Maybe I’m wrong about his, but from the letter you posted, it sounds to me as if Dr. Bronner would be right beside Jon on this case.

Although I don’t disagree with your comments about fluoride, what has this to do with this article about GMO? Just because Bronner doesn’t like fluoride, does not justify his reaction/stance on GMO. The two are not related. If you are trying to defend him by saying “he tells the truth about fluoride, so therefore anything else he says must be the right thing to do” is absurd.
Lexi – – the post above by Proud Truther refers to statements by an older Dr Bronner than the one in favor of the LOSER strategy labeling campaign. EH Bronner seemed to favor a more aggressive strategy when dealing with these kinds of health threats.

I think you are absolutely dead-on correct about this, Jon. The campaign for “right to know” is missing the boat and in its own way, colluding in the coverup of what’s really going on. Why so afraid to put themselves out there and speak the truth? Lots of people know the truth and are afraid to speak it. What if everyone who knows the truth starts speaking it *anyway*? Can they “suicide” all of us? (the quick kill vs. the slow kill, I guess.)
If you KNOW the truth and *fail to speak up* then you are no better than the ones who are outright deceivers.

There was nothing in German’s water at the time of the Nazis. German’s water was and is one of the best in the world.
Considering that 1/6 Americans are of German descent, and are holding most straws of the game, I for one am not surprised of why the US is what it is. The “American dream” has been actually a German dream … as Jon says :”… so many people want things to be easy and clean and nice and neat.”

The labeling campaigns are irrelevant as to the right objective of informing people that GMO is poison. It does waste money, energy, focus, and volunteers passion (lukewarm though that may seem to be from the looks of their campaign).
Using the various blogs, forums, twitter, etc to help change the LOSER strategy is a great idea. So is going around them completely.

Well, you know that old saying:

Hey, wait a minute. That doesn’t sound right.
Never mind.
The “Right To Know” campaign is doomed to failure – we KNOW that some part of our food supply has been supplanted with FrankenFood; the campaign must be to RID OUR FOOD SUPPLY OF FRANKENFOOD.
David Bronner can be a great help – let’s just ask him about his diet.
Jon, I sympathize with where you are coming from, and while I do agree with each of your points independently, I believe the strategy you are advocating is divisive and counter productive.
Essentially, I believe you are fixating on only doing what is ideal, rather than focusing on accomplishing what is possible, and then once the possible is accomplished, using it as a stepping stone to achieve the ideal.
This is a very common mistake, and it regularly destroys the ability of activist groups to get anything done.
The present reality we are living in is that
1) A lot of fucked up shit happens around us.
2) People are conditioned to dismiss and accept these events either by condemning them as “conspiracy theories” or simply making up an excuse to ignore and not think about the matter.
3) At best 20% (and most likely less than 20%) of the population will acknowledge the bad things being done around us, rather than finding some way to dismiss their existence.
4) In order to facilitate any form of real democratic change, you need the support of 60% of the population.
If you consider those 4 principles, they explain why aggressively complaining about all the problems in the world is not effective way to address them. To many people will just instinctively follow their socially conditioned behavior, ie. “I think I’ll just put my head in the sand on this one, after all it’s just a cooky conspiracy theory,” or “this is too extreme and offensive of a position to take, so I will choose to be politically correct and not involve myself in the discourse.”
Now let’s consider 4 aspects the intelligent strategy that was devised to solve this problem:
1) If GMO food is ever labeled, that will kill the industry.
2) Asking people to label GMO food is a much less extreme position than asking them to accept and believe they are toxic poisons that numerous parties have been colluding to force them to consume.
3) GMO labelling is in people’s self interest, as it expands their power and choice. People are much more likely to vote for things which “give them stuff.”
4) Everything the Anti GMO activists, and more extreme members of that 20% want, can be gotten by simply allowing GMOs to be labeled. As such, they will all passionately rally behind a banner than the general population can agree with as well.
Conversely, if an effective strategy has come along which will help the population, why would someone like you wish to sabotage it?
The general possibilities I have seen in previous cases (not just relating to GMO) are.
1) The individual is a paid disinformation agent whose goal is to disrupt and derail the movement for a Pro GMO party.
2) The individual is, in polite terms an idiot and just does not understand how the world works or the actual consequences of their actions.
3) The individual is primarily concerned with self promotion. It is much easier to talk shit to get attention and fame, than to try really hard for a long period of time to do something well and then be awknowledged for it. That is just an unforunate aspect of the human condition. As such, many people try to jump to fame by getting in the middle of a coherent activist movement, and then trying to tear down it’s leaders so they can get some degree of the attention previously devoted there.
I am relatively sure that Dr. Bronner is a good fellow who really believes in what he is doing, and is trying his hardest to fix something he believes is important. It’s not fair to go after someone like that just because you think anything short of your ideal is not acceptable for anyone to do.
There is a famous quote you should consider:
“Politics is the art of the possible.”
That should read “Politics is the Art of the propaganda.” and the original as you posted was the proto-idealogy of the Junker ‘Bismarck’, may he be toasting rather nicely now in Hell right now. Do you realize that Junker thinking marched the Prussian and eventual Geman Republic down the road to the Weimar and eventual German Reich and two successive World Wars in less than forty year period.
The quote is a utter contradiction in terms, by any other stardard is an oxymoron at the veryminimum a dichotomy. Like a oil and water.

What’s up with Labeling, anyway?
Labeling is a loser position from jump street….the “red-headed stepchild” of a marriage between Propaganda and Lobbying.
The REAL threat is a complete BAN of all Genetically Modified Foods and 100% elimination of Chemicals from our food and water supply.
Any other argument sets the stage for compromise and capitulation. And, THIS is the reality outside the Matrix that the stage players don’t want the people to see.
I remember the squalling from MaBell in the early 80’s, complaining about how much loot they’d lose, if they were forced to “break up” their monopoly. The Phone Company Lobbyists went to work and were able to get the government to “force” the break-up.
The Babybells made gillions.
18 other governments of the world have already kicked the Ag behemoths out of their country. The Plan B for the corporate interests requires the script to read, Labeling, rather than Outlawing.
At present, the battle in the US is losing because it is not being fought on the right grounds.
Switch the argument to Outlawing GMO’s and toxic herbicides, pesticides and fungicides, as well as Fluoride, and lay out the case succinctly….and WIN!
I agree Washington’s campaign was wimpy. OK….so the labeling tactic failed but those who contributed big money to the two campaigns need to be commended. Considering the monumental damage and continued threat to our planet that GMOs cause not many companies or individuals have stepped forward. Hopefully Washington at least created some new activists willing to fight this most important fight, and hopefully we will all play harder and dirtier from now on.

these big-money financiers are smart do-gooders that should be commended? for financing 2 losing battles and promising to use the same losing arguments on another losing battle? oh please. they have mba’s and experience in PR. they keep losing the same losing battle over & over because they know it’s all for show. elections are rigged anyway, so until that election-fraud myth is straightened out, nothing can be accomplished.

well, where are they? If they were interested, they’d be here talking about this. Jon presents the most succinct and cohesive information – I have read almost all of these Jon articles, interviews, comments, editorials, fact lists, etc., and I haven’t seen one, not one single big-money contributor speak up. why?
Jon is exposing the root of the problem. he dug out the dirt and got to the root. He should be world hero. Yet, he’s mostly ignored. Journalists, editors, publishers, academics, doctors, politicians … where are they?
Not here presenting facts, figures and real arguments.
Much of the comments by responders seems split between a first things first beginning with labeling.. Those responders in an earlier era would have waited enthusiastically for the Dictatorship of the Proletariat to refer back to Jon´s analogy. and those preaching to the choir or simply agreeing with Jon, naming and describing the dangers to a vast populace. The question is how is such a project that could compete successfully with Monsanto et.al., be financed?
Is it possible that a broad national body of supporters could be built using organs like Activist Post for instance. Of course such organs might have to consider possible, consequences, not out of cowardice, but of fear of being ruined and thus shut down all together by massive law suits. I have read just recently of a community being badly shaken by a law suit brought by Monsanto. . .
This is what I call ‘the fallacy of informed consent.’ People think that it’s okay to sell anything or do anything at all, no matter how deadly or toxic or dangerous, as long as they inform somebody beforehand and get a ‘yes.’ People simply cannot understand what the ‘risks’ really mean until they experience them, and then suddenly they realize that they didn’t say yes to this. If something is dangerous, you just shouldn’t sell it, consent or no consent, informed or not informed.
Whereas I agree with your drift, Jon, you are being a little unfair.
The reason Monsanto’s Roundup was sprayed on crops was because farmers were GREEDY. They thought they could beat the system and turn “what was” unworkable land into something that yields or improve the yield on workable land. Now, we all know what happens when you open a Pandora’s box…..
If there was any real case against Monsanto, who merely “satisfy the market”, it would be justified by the [then] CEO’s response to FauxNews [amazingly!] expose on GM milk. When the CEO’s wife quizzed him on human ethics, his response was, “BUT YOU DON’T HAVE TO DRINK IT”.
Wow, great article!! This is such an important issue, but to be honest I’ve already started growing my own food..or as much of it as I can. I think more cities need to start doing that (with NON GMO seeds) but in the mean time hopefully this is moving in the right direction.
Dr Bronner is in the right business. Maybe they could branch out into snake oil?

Approximately 95% of Americans favor GMO labeling. Unfortunately for the 95%, Mr. Diebold is firmly in the camp of the opposing 5%.
Great commentary and deeply cathartic. I was extremely frustrated when organizers used an approach of timid advertising and public education for the California initiative. The lack of open debate on the health dangers GMOs pose was nonsensical. In terms of maximizing television advertisements, commercials that asked the public if they trusted (1) an industry spokesperson who decades earlier vouched for the safety of cigarette smoking, and (2) a company that gave us agent orange, would have gone much further in creating an entrenched resistance to GMOs and a broader awakening.
You’ve hit the bull’s eye, Jon, smack dab in the centre: From all indications, the ones running the ‘Yes on I-522’ campaign are naught but the controlled opposition. Milquetoast, pantywaist, and limp-wristed.

I think this this is all great (anti-GMO, anti-fluoride, etc), but there will not be any good life for most humans on this earth so long as people create children with the sole purpose of dumping them into the “system” to care and provide for. It’s actually kind of amazing that the system has been able to keep up with it all. The systems only conclusion can be utter and complete (technological) enslavement of humanity. At this time, the global population sits at 1000 people per sq.mi. of arable land (generally arable only because of technology!). If the system fails to enslave the entire planet, this world will see human cannibalism on an unprecedented and inconceivable scale.
That is the problem of problems for humanity. When are we going to tackle it? Never. So, my final conclusion as I near the end of life is “I don’t really give a damn”. If it ain’t one thing, it’s gonna be another, until utter catastrophe. It’s no wonder every civilization for the last 100,000 years has been a 100% failure. The fundamental problem is that “masses are power”, and can and will always be used to plunder & destroy those that live in a simple sustainable harmony with nature.
Spot on, Chad. Commerce FIRST. People SECOND.

I just read your other article on Infowars. The problem with being direct and confrontational about GMO’s is that – it is true – you can only be direct and confrontational in the “minor media”, and that just gets you branded as a nut by the masses. So, IMHO, it is a little unfair to attack David Bronner for being soft on the issue, after all, he does have valuable experience in marketing (success and failures), and did dedicate a few fortunes to the effort, more than anyone else. I arrived here out of interest/admiration in reading about David Bronner. Of course, the Chemical Giants also have a point because there simply is no way to keep feeding an ever-increasing population without utilizing technology to create new sources of food (not saying that GMO has been a success so far) – but the deeper problem is that without an ever-increasing population, the entire global financial system will crash, leading to cannibalism on a global scale. This is a FACT – FACT – FACT!
We are populating ourselves into our own nightmare out of our own irresponsibilities (failing to provide for our own children) and greed (wanting the good life off even if plunder and slavery is the way).
There simply is no way out of all these massive problems facing humanity – and Ted Kaczynski was correct in his (limited published) analysis. He has 170IQ approximately, and his PhD thesis was on boundary theory, a paper only a few in the entire world could even comprehend. Most/all other large mammals refuse to ovulate when natural abundance is lacking, but not humans. Human breed even when they are starving to death, as if they are a prey animal, and the financial/economic systems have been established to accomodate this unsustainable practise. I don’t see how anyone can say the future holds anything but 110% technological enslavement or cannibalism as the final outcome. Where do people think they are going? We are not leaving this planet – there is no way around cosmic radiation.
