Obamacare: watch out, here comes “predictive modeling”

Modeling or programming?

A Medai.com article, “Why is Predictive Modeling Essential to Healthcare?” offers this quote:

“…the algorithms of predictive modeling can analyze hundreds of data points to make a diagnosis or a prediction of risk.”

This is the new thing in American medicine, and everyone is climbing onboard. The idea is to combine diverse sets of data, to diagnose a patient—and also predict what illnesses will strike designated sectors of the population by identifying what social, economic, gender, and behavioral groups they belong to.

“Oh, yes, in USA population sector A-2ab, we can view the electronic health records of 10,000 patients who are single, under 30, live at home with their parents, have a history of ignoring medical advice, display symptoms of ADHD, graduated college with less than a 3.0 grade average, have taken prescription pain meds within the last five years…according to statistics, this group stands a better than 65% chance of developing clinical depression within the next 6.23 years. Therefore, we should prescribe them prophylactic antidepressants now, to save money on more expensive treatments later. If we utilize our algorithm and adjust code 4aQ1 and code 7B2Ex, we’ll be able to pinpoint which patients in this group need medication immediately…”

This is coming. The structure is being built now, across all medical and insurance organizations.

The hubris involved is outstanding, to say nothing of the intrusion on privacy, and the recent abysmal track record of government merely trying to sign people up for Obamacare.

Of course, the proponents of prediction are promising better patient outcomes, enormous $$ savings, and a Brave New World in which “at-risk” groups can be spared suffering before it occurs.

Managed Care has published an article, “More Data in Health Care Will Enable Predictive Modeling Advances.”

Here are two key quotes:

“Predictive modeling (PM) has grown to be a linchpin of care management. Health plans, integrated delivery systems, and other health care organizations (HCOs) increasingly channel their patients to interventions based in part on what they deduce from predictive models that have traditionally been run against databases of administrative claims. In this arena, the Affordable Care Act (ACA) [Obamacare] is likely to exert a profound effect.”

“…a growing number of health care experts, including the Care Continuum Alliance, see predictive modeling as an opportunity to prevent [disease] complications, control [hospital] readmissions, generate more precise diagnoses and treatments, predict risk, and control costs for a more diverse array of population segments than previously attempted.”

I could attack this gobbledegook PR in a number of ways, but I’ll cut to the real bottom line. The entirety of predictive modeling rests on the assumption that, in making disease and mental-disorder diagnoses, doctors are basically working from a correct playbook. Otherwise, they could massage data ‘til the cows come home and they would commit disastrous blunder after blunder.

But the basic playbook is not correct. For all 300 officially certified mental disorders, there are, in fact, no defining physical tests for diagnosis. None. No blood tests, no urine tests, no brain scans, no genetic assays.

For germ-caused diseases, the “tried and true” diagnostic tests are completely misleading. The antibody tests are frequently false-positive, and the presence of antibodies, in the first place, merely indicates that the patient has contacted the germ in question. It says nothing about present or future illness. In fact, a positive antibody test often means the opposite of illness: the patient’s immune system has contacted the germ and thrown it off.

The PCR diagnostic test takes a tiny, tiny amount of what is purported to be genetic material from a germ, and amplifies it many times so it can be observed. But the hallmark of illness, when germs may be involved at all, is: you have millions of a particular bacteria or virus being very active—in which case, you didn’t need the PCR test in the first place. You needed the PCR because you couldn’t find enough germ material in the patient to knock over a fly.

So…place these irrelevant and misleading diagnostic tests into the predictive modeling framework, and what do you get? False predictions.

Then there are the medical drugs. I’ve cited the Starfield Review many times. July 26, 2000, Journal of the American Medical Association, “Is US Health Really the Best in the World?” Dr. Barbara Starfield, from the Johns Hopkins of School of Public Health, pointed out that, every year in the US, FDA approved medicines kill 106,000 people. In our 2009 interview, Starfield told me this was a conservative estimate.

This is tragedy and murder on a massive scale, supported by what have to be deceitfully glowing studies done on the drugs and routinely published in leading medical journals.

No one in his right mind would believe that all this lying and crime, embedded in a new and advanced predictive model, would produce anything except expanded disaster.

With the bonus that you lose your medical privacy, and you are observed and data-mined in other ways—as a “unit” that belongs to various groups. And oh yes, you get toxic drugs before you’re sick. It’s predictive. Hail to the Chief.

Up the line, proponents of traditional/ natural health, nutritional supplements, and “alternative practices” will discover that, as independent humans, they’re anomalies. The official algorithms don’t include what they do to maintain health. Therefore, they’re outliers.

“Sorry, we can’t model you in our predictions. You don’t compute. You’re illegal. Oh, wait. You do fit into one category: Threat. Potential Danger to the State.”

Here’s another version of predictive programming…. and all male doctors and shrinks better listen up because you are next.

    1) Any man with a functioning Johnson (or “member,” whatever you are calling your family jewels these days) should be arrested immediately for possession of the equipment required to perpetrate rape.

    2) Any male found to have a genetic predisposition for testicular cancer should have those removed too. If it’s okay with Angelina Jolie, it’s good enough for you.

There… that should fix all this ludicrous crap right up. You’re welcome.

So what is the answer for a person who doesn’t have the funds to choose their own doctor outside of their government mandated health plan? Just don’t make an appointment for a checkup in the first place? Just…. not go? Ever? Perhaps there is no need actually to go to a doctor for a well checkup anymore, if this is what we are going to be subjected to. And, if we do get sick, well there are options (currently) to take care of yourself at home. For a healthy person who doesn’t take any medications or vaccinations and doesn’t intend to, who has no intention of being subjected to x-rays and blood tests and internal probes, who knows how to be healthy and is not afraid of dying eventually, what is the point of going to a doctor at all? Except perhaps in case of an accident if you need stitching up. It seems a giant waste of money though, to pay all this money for insurance for something you are likely never to need or use. Might be nice for a person on a limited income to be able, instead, to opt for cheaper, catastrophic care for the rare instance of an accident in need of stitching up…. and keep that insurance premium money and spend it on healthy food and plant medicine.

At which point will our file be flagged since we haven’t been to the doctor for awhile? Will they come round us up and bring us in for mandatory checkups? Or will we be allowed to quietly fall through the cracks, since we are older (our children will not be allowed to fall through the cracks, I assume).

Dani, it’s pretty well known but never mentioned in the msm that whenever there are doctor strikes, the population morbidity goes DOWN. Most, dare i say all, medical problems with the exception of trauma care, do not need medical intervention. What’s needed, according to just about all the alt health people, is proper nutrition and detoxification. So rev up your juicer and break out the enema bag. More effective, far cheaper and free of the snooping.

I suspect they will leave us alone for a good long while since very few amerikans “get it.”

Thanks Jon for exposing this newest government control mechanism! I think Dani that you are in the same position that I have been in. I literally had to wait until I buckled to get in and have surgery due to a lower intestine issue. I actually died for 8 seconds while being pumped full of morphine lying on a cart. You see without insurance they would not use their expensive scanning equipment so there I laid for over 3 hours.

Bottom line is I think is that you either contribute to the corrupt system or you are left to die. The hospital was forced to do my surgery but when it came to the 89 thousand plus dollars I owed they could only put a lien on my home. Our system is so screwed up people are dying every day yet we still spend billions of dollars on our military, Israel and other pointless ventures. What a joke the US has become! Love and blessings to all…….mike

I am sorry to hear of your troubles, procomptor. My position is/was that several years ago I found myself without insurance and unable to afford insurance. I decided then that the only thing I could do was be as healthy as possible, since I couldn’t afford to go to the doctor and pay out of pocket, either. At the time, I had only a basic knowledge of how to take care of myself, but really felt at the mercy of the system and pretty helpless, if and when I would get sick.

My financial difficulties at the time were a blessing in disguise, because I gave myself the herbal and nutritional medicine equivalent of a medical school education, through extensive study and practice. I now know how to take care of myself and no longer fear getting sick and that is one reason I greatly resent this Obamacare system we have been saddled with.

We have been lied to about the nature of wellness and disease, what creates it and how to heal from it. We have been made to feel dependent on this bloated and expensive system that is part of what is creating all of this disease.

I never would have believed before that my mind would be so vastly changed about all of this. I was raised to have faith in doctors and conventional medicine. I no longer do, and I most definitely do not wish to pay forced insurance premiums into a system I doubt I will ever need to use.

For the record, I am not a young person.

It is truly sinister and alarming, this intrusion into our personal space which now includes our most intimate space — our bodies. How dare anyone presume to predict any individual’s future based on modeling. You can’t. (though doctors do this now, when they pronounce death sentences on people: “you have 2 months to live…”). People change ALL THE TIME. I am an example of this — I turned my life around, entirely on my own, and i am not the same person I was several years ago. I do not think that could have been predicted.

Wow, Dani! You keep saying all the right things! Let’s get married! We can move to a rural area, have our own farm where we grow organic crops ‘n’ stuff, adopt some kids and home-school ’em, and earn money by writing books, with titles like “Scientific Materialism: The Rise of the State Church.”

      • Raven says:

I have the same exact story, Dani. To the letter. I’m not young either but I’m extraordinarily healthy for my age and I take full responsibility for that. I haven’t been to a doctor of any kind since 1990. All of the money I saved by not having health insurance I spend on organic food and whatever natural remedies I need, but those are few and far between, expect for a bit of arnica gel when I ride my bike or run too far! Perfect health is possible, all it takes is the courage to ween yourself from the Big Pharma tit. Congratulations!

Thanks dani for the reply. Many years ago I was in a severe accident that shattered my clavicle and severed most of the nerves in my left arm. I was told I would never have use of my arm and was prescribed 800 Neurontin and 190 Percocet a month. After 2.5 years in a clinic I told the doctors I needed to start lowering my dose because as a thermal dynamics engineer I was loosing my ability to do my job. They promptly replied “We know what’s best for you”. I then called the main doctor in and told him they had some nerve in telling me they knew my body better than me and to put the medication into the …emmm well the black hole!

I then turned to eastern teachings as I am a martial arts participant and a friend of mine with 7 belts was helping me get mine. A few years later I take around 10 ibuprofen a day along with working out 3-4 times a week and although the pain is there I am doing as well as ever. NO MEDICATION WILL EVER REMOVE SEVERE PAIN FROM SEVERE NERVE DAMAGE AS IT JUST NUMB’S IT! YOU HAVE TO LEARN TO ACCEPT IT AND WORK IT! My way of life has improved and I am better at my job then ever before.

The human mind is incredible and capable of nearly anything if you simply believe and stay active! Thanks again and Lords Blessings with lots of Love…..mike

As usual, by claiming to predict the future behavior (and in this case future health) of human beings, the control system undermines its favorite concept to undermine; free will.

  6. The only domain the allopaths are good in is emergency / trauma care (when you need a cast for a broken bone or need to be stitched up)–but that’s only when they’re not addicted to street drugs or alcohol, which a study done by Harvard says 55% of MDs are.

For chronic illness I’d listen to what Drs. Joel Wallach and Peter Glidden have to say.

  7. mary says:

Excellent article yet again Jon. Really, nothing left to say, except keep them coming. You probably feel like you’re shouting into the abyss, but there are some of us who appreciate what you do and learn from you. Thanks for all your great work for liberty.

  8. brad says:

I saw a documentary recently that, among other things, followed two doctors in Asia practicing traditional Tibetan medicine using herbs. I can’t speak to the efficacy of Tibetan medicine, but what astounded me was the relationship the doctors had with their patients including genuine concern and compassion. Based on their diagnosis, the doctors prepared herbal blends, grown themselves or locally, specific to the patient, prepared by their own hand with apprentices helping, including packaging them, and handed them to the patient with instructions on how to use them. It shouldn’t have been, but based on the delivery of ‘health services’ that we’re accustom to in the US, it was amazing to see. These doctors are healers; how common is that in the US system nowadays would you guess?

    • Brad, if the people of Asia got the proper nutrition they needed and stopped eating crap that’s hurting their bodies they wouldn’t need any medicinal herbs. Prescribing herbs in most cases is like prescribing drugs and it does not get to the root cause of the problem–poor nutrition and lack of sufficient nutrients. An herb, like a drug, can increase or decrease certain biochemical processes in the body and as this happens it uses up raw materials (nutrients)–when nutrients are what the body is lacking in the first place. An herb will only have certain nutrients present, and only when they are present in the soil. If there’s no selenium in the soil there’s no selenium in the herb. For optimal functioning our bodies need vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and essential fatty acids in optimal quantities. (And the more you exercise the more you need; that’s why couch potatoes live longer and athletes have lower life expectancies.) There’s no way around this. It’s all nutrition. Any doctor who can’t see this is reductionistic, regardless of whether they’re an allopath or an Traditional Tibetan herbalist.

  9. Thank you again Jon for planting seeds of higher awareness.

In my view the only sustainable model is a critical mass of humans awakening beyond extreme deceptions, and cooperating to end lawlessness, crimes against humanity, and nature.

  10. Rumplestiltskin says:

Excuse me all to hell, but this statement; “…the algorithms of predictive modeling can analyze hundreds of data points to make a diagnosis or a prediction of risk.”

    PREDICTION OF RISK ???

“FINANCIAL RISK” is what they mean. If it doesn’t look like the patient will get over their cancer by “statistical analysis”, they’ll just be refused treatment. This is the very concept behind “Death Panels” that all the buerocrats said was not in the bill.

They are turning us into a statistics, and with about as much concern or empathy. […]

    • Rumplestiltskin, being refused their cut and burn treatment is the better option. I’d rather reduce my risk of cancer through the intake of nutrients, including selenium (which has been proven to reduce the risk of breast cancer by 82%–Dr. Wallach sued the FDA to be able to claim this–AND WON), and the stopping of eating inflammatory foods and other crap.

Thanks for this update. Hadn’t heard of their latest lingo-twisting – “predictive modeling” – which sounds more like a profiling of anorexic girls as to whether they will ever make “runway” material.

Besides ObamaScare wanting to predict everyone’s future diseases, they also want to predict our deaths, as was reported in the news a year ago & commonly referred to as the “Death Test” (for the 50+ crowd). That irked me (equally as much as your latest revelation) so I had saved that news here, along w/my interruptive commentary re same:
    http://fastingparadise.wordpress.com/2013/04/27/age-50-death-test-commie-inspired-sucker-punch/

I agree w/other commentors here re Avoid AMA-brainwashed Doctors, Drugs, Hospitals, etc. to the best of your ability. The more you learn, the less you will want any interaction whatsoever with that entire fearmongering network, all spawned from JD Rockefeller’s Standard Oil > he funded the medical schools, Big Med, to train drug pushers > Chemical Co’s spawned from Big Oil > Big Pharma spawned from Big Chem > & now they’ve got Big Ag roped in as well. Our bodies were not created to ingest crude oil, chemicals, nor drugs.
